Hi there one and all

I'm in need of some advice...I'm 1.61cm and weigh 47 kilos, but tough . I like a fast and quick reacting board/kite and am fast to react myself.

The dilemma is I need a new board. I ride in anything from 14-28 knots and in fairly choppy water, currently am on my first board, an old banger measuring 127 x 39, with what seem like the first footstraps ever made....
Most times when I surf I get high velocity water in my eyes which I think is due to the board being too small for chop. Should add I surf with a 6m ozone or a 5m gaastra kite.

What size board, what width? Carbon or no carbon? Different edges on different sides a la 'Best' boards or it's unimportant?

I've been looking at a North board for girls but it's aroung 4 years old, though in good nick. It's 129x 38. Is there really a major diff in boards in that time? I thought to get it as I can then mess it up trying wave starts without having a panic attack!

I've trawled sites, but this stage I feel my braincells are poppin' out my ears with info, none of which has given me an answer...

I'd say I'm intermediate but a quick learner, so massive boards are out.

Thanks a mil for any info!

Great site BTW!

Cheers

Cauncy, thanks for your reply :)

I just mailed them. Never heard of Shinn before.... Interesting, looking at their description of the board they still just talk about kilos, nothing mentioned regarding chop which seems a big factor (?) Wondering what the difference would be their 127 to my current 127...' given that width is same ? They suggest 2cm more width gives more surface area but what of those waves!!! Perhaps it is the cut at the tips?

I tried a 132 x 40 and no waves in face but was like riding a table

Cheers

As any shinn board owner will tell you, the ride is butter smooth, this was one of the main factors for me , with a small swell day and 30 knts our local is possibly the best test for a boards ability in chop, also zero spray from the board, I've had top end variousness brands but the shinns are definatly worth a good trial, most comment on the smoothness of the boards which make them sound reserved, but you can go as hard or steady as you want with that same comfort of ride, unfortunately most people are influenced by graphics or bling which makes bugger all difference,

Sounds like your current board is quite old. If it is it most likely has little flex and an old school outline. Any board made in the last 4 years should be an improvement.

This year Naish have really stepped it up a notch with a true performance board and MUCH better straps and pads than most other brands.

With regards to chop in your eyes, I had the same issue. I did an experiment and it showed me what board I should get - a bigger board.
What I did was to sit down on a grass area with my board attached to my feet and get a friend to use a high-pressure hose (garden hose should be enough) and spray at the board from "underneath" the board if you know what I mean. I was able to quickly tell if too much spray was hitting me on the face and decided a larger board was in order. I never looked back!
Y ojala que encuentras algo luego para tu deporte! Ole!

Oooops, sorry for late replies, the wind came up and ....whoooooooooooosh down to the beach

Cauncy - Thanks for the link. I checked out Shinn, mailed them and got a really nice rapid response mail back from Mark Shinn. Oh be still mine heart, lovely board...729euros
He also seconded what you said, it depends... Although a 129 x 39 sounds about right. The smaller size for an aggressive rider (moi) but doesn't solve wave in face prob. Interestingly they don't use carbon which I was told is the holy grail of boards... I'm sure they're worth every penny but, unfortunately, my wallet had a heart attack.

Brisbud - Thanks for the pic. Super board, sadly it's right up there in the same moula category, I was aiming for a last year model... You are right though, my board is about 6-7 years old, even a plank would be an upgrade
Glad I had it two days ago though, got smashed around in the surf in 25 knots trying to do the beach start. The board took a right walloping of stones and dragging, with me attached. For this reason and motheaten wallet, I have decided to go with the second hand girls North Paris 129 x 39. I'll then at least have some benchmark other than the banger to compare with, also, I won't have to be too precious with it, a skill killer if ever there was one. In a year or so hopefully I'll be skilled enough to do justice to a rolls royce!

Loftywinds - I never thought of that! The old eyes though, really hurts when you're speeding along and get a wave full force in the eyeball

I have an appreciation of the tech side of boards now anyway, so nothing is lost.

I'll post an update on how it goes.

Many thanks to all of you who kindly took the time to help out a greenhorn on the other side of the globe, it's much appreciated

I bought some seaspecs from ebay, solved most of my water in the eye issues.

Really Happy with the Shinn Monk.

After trying a cabrinha custom (too much rocker, but soft in the chop), north Team Series (to stiff, my knees couldn't stand more than one hour in tarifa) I wouldn't come back.

My only complain are the bindings.

Mucha suerte con tu eleccion.
