Hey folks,

Quick question to anyone who thinks they can help. Im currently scared shietless of my quiver of kites and dont know what to do. Have been kiting for around a month and doing pretty well (think so anyways =D), currently landing 3/4 big sent jumps. The problem is the 1/4 that I am not landing or not landing well are causing the kite to invert within the bridle and cause continuous death rolls!

My quiver includes:
11m Bandit 3
8m Bandit 3
12m Naish Torch

As of today (2 days in a row now!) both the bandits have done as I have described in the passage above and I am quite literally scared ****less of messing up a landing, the last time it happened I over rotated but manged to land but overtook the kite too much as i was heading too far down wind. Up till now have been very lucky up till now having experienced kiters there to help.

Is this a problem with the bandit 3's??? Looking at selling the 2 bandits, or possibly just the 11. Have these issues been fixed in the later model bandits (the local pro told me he sold his quiver as they were doing this often)? OR should i be looking at a different make/model? NB. Like the heavier bar pressure feels good when loading up :D

Any help or opinions helpful thanks,

Josh

Hey Josh,

Your problem is as you have obviously picked up on yourself you are going downwind of your kite when you mess up. Best way to avoid this is to go back to gaining more control in your jumps or when you do mess up do whatever you can to get the kite back into the window before you land and it all goes wrong.

Unfortunately changing kites probably won't help as any kite with a bridle can do the same thing. Obviously with a C kite it won't happen and if you fly a 5 line kite deploying the safety will stop any looping caused by a tip wrap.

Most F-One dealers can sort you out with a 5th line mod if that helps.

Thanks for that info jas,

In regards to that 5th line mod, is it going to make much difference as I hit the quick release on the chicken loop and all it does is remove the bar from my reach but doesn't let it go far enough to nullify the deathlooping. Without fail I have to punch off the safety line. Not sure but the fifth line setups still rely on the center lines depowering the kite...

Thanks,
Josh

If you run a full 5th line setup which hooks to the leading edge like your Torch does your kite will stop looping when you pull the QR.

You could even test it out using your Torch bar but will have to make a 5th line leader to suit the depth of your Bandit.

Can't help with the Bandits or Torch. But you need to do some research on jumping technique.

Here's a few things to help.

Start with small jumps off chop, concentrate on edging and build up from there.

If you're landing with slack lines and crashing the kite resulting in a rollover you haven't edged hard enough prior to take off. It's all in the timing - sending the kite, edging, control in the air. Also, point your board downwind on landing and then edge hard to pull yourself back on track. Don't forget to drive the kite forward as you're coming down. There's a lot more things to do as well and plenty of posts on this subject. Check Youtube too.

If you're over rotating you may have the bar pulled in too much through the jump. Let it out when you want to touch down and drive the kite forward.

I fly a 10m B3 and haven't had this problem, nor did I with the Bandit Dos. Really edge hard and lean right back prior to launch. Too many people think changing gear will solve their problems. Progressively build up the size of your jumps if all you are after is big jumps. Don't go bigger until you're well in control of smaller jumps.

I'll call you tomorrow jase, chase up the fifth line setup might try it on the 11. Talked to the guy who instructed me trev today and he shed some light pretty much saying what you guys are.

GO SLOWER... smaller steps! Coming from a skating/wakeboarding background not too bad at the whole edging stage, can get a few meters height out of a decent load and pop, no issues landing pops, but yeah think its the kite skills that need dramatic improvement!

Thanks for the tips! all the jumps that I have failed landing have been with the over rotating problem, and i know this is due bad timing, edging to hard to early, stalling before the kite reaches peak height in the window, and yeah im trying not to look at the kite (read thats a big no no from a few different sources). Hadn't heard that about oversheeting causing my rotations thanks!

Burkey, thank you very much for that info!! I will hang onto the bandits try the fifth line mod on the larger one, see how we go from there :) Having had extremely high winds past few days (first times really tried jumping) probably not the optimal conditions to learn in, being 60kg having the winds pick up from 15knts to 26knts yesterday on my 11 was daunting should have come insure a lot sooner felt like an idiot being out there. The whole sport is extremely daunting so many crash courses you have to learn just to have a chance of not hurting yourself =/

Sounds like you're getting your head around what's happening though, which is good for someone so new at the sport. 60kg and up to 26knts on a B3 11m? I'm 83kg and would be putting the brakes on my 10 and thinking about getting out the 8m, nothing like jumping in at the deep end!
have fun.

Is this a problem with the bandit 3's???

It's a common problem with the technique and will happen on other kites too.

The main thing you can do to stop overflying your kite when jumping is to pull on the front of the bar as you start coming down
(pull hard enough so that the kite ends up in front of you by the time you touch the water).
