Just a newbie, with the new modern kites what would be a good starting size ,for a 100 kg bloke and would a 5 line be an advantage

Hey mate welcome to the world of Opinions as with any new sport you start out in
I Tip the scales at 105kg and started out with an 11m F-one revolt and a 140-41 Xride board.
To be honest I wouldn't blow it up unless it was a solid 15knts, from 15-25knts it was more than enough to get going.
Upgraded board to a 2010 T555 140/44 and found planning in light winds and shallow water a hell of alot easier, helped alot going upwind as well.

I tried a 14m North rebel and found it very slow to turn compared to the delta shape of the F-one, My local guy ordered me a 13m F-one bandit.
Have only had it it out once since the westerlies turned up but it definaltly will fly in less wind than the 11m.

Have only been kiting 6 mths myself and have asked the same questions as you have over and over, will still keep the 11m as a big wind kite maybe down the track might get a new 9 or 10m.
hope this helps

Hi mate, i am 105 and fly a 15m envy up to 25 knots. I wouldn't go any smaller than 13m if i were you. A 4 line kite would probably be easier to learn on than a 5 line imo. When you have lessons your instructor will be able to advise you on size and type etc. Good luck

Depends on where you live. I'd say a 10m in WA, maybe 12-13m elsewhere.

I am about the same size i.e near on 100kg. Been kiting a fair while but just your average punter. As you get better and you kite technique improves you will get more out of a kite.

Your location and how you want to use it will play a big part in kite choice. So will how you want to ride. I like to ride a little on the overpowered side. Weight does make a fair difference. More than you think so be wary of skinny people telling you to get small kites. I have people question my kite choice a lot telling me i am pumping up too big of a kite. I explain that i am just a little heavier than they are.

I have a 14/12 (just sold but will buy another 12)/9. All Switchblades as they are powerful for their size and stable. I believe Fone bandits / Rhinos / Rebels are all fairly powerful for their size too. Ask your shop. These days with new kites you cant really lose and it really comes down to what you want it for surf, freeride, freestyle, wake etc.

I have the following with the rough wind ranges (they do overlap).
14 - 15-20knts
12 - 20-25knts
9 - 25+knts

I also have a surfboard (6'4) and a twintip (133 I know that sounds small but its what i like). My favourite is the 9m but does not get used that much but when it does i am smiling. The 12 gets used the most closely followed by the 14 but thats Victoria for you. In a perfect world i would also have a 7m for riduculous days and a 17m Ozone Zephyr for really light days but where do you stop and who has the money.

Hope that helps. The problem you will have is that the 12m would probably be your best bet for one kite quiver. But the problem is it sits in the middle. So somes days it will be too light and some days it will be too heavy. You would get more from say a 9or10 / 13 for two kite quiver depending on make but the costs add up and three kite and so on.
