So I had my first lesson this week after contemplating trying it for years, absolutely loved it and have been looking for some kit to use after I've had a couple more lessons.

I've looked through countless forum posts which I think has probably confused me more so here's what I've got so far:

I weigh 75kg, Im mostly going to be riding around port phillip bay mostly st kilda/Brighton area

from what I've gathered so far a 9/10 meter kite would be suitable for my weight. (please feel free to suggest otherwise)

I've been looking at the Naish Bolt (can get it very cheaply from the UK) and the best kahoona, I know alot of people have suggested cabrinhas to other people but its a bit out of my price range as I'd preferably like to buy a new kite from 09/10

Hi JethroP, unless you have a good mate who is an experienced kiter who is prepared and has time to help you get sorted... I think you would be better off going to your local shop and letting them help in your gear decision making. I know you can save a few bucks OS but IMO the back up service/advice/some offer free lessons etc from you local shop (if you have one) is worth the extra $$$ in the long run, especially when learning.

Hi thanks for the reply, I probably should of mentioned before Ive been kite landboarding and buggying for about 2 years and been flying foils for the past 5 so in terms of kite control I feel relatively confident, when I first started with that i dove straight in without any advice, tuition etc. and have already learnt the hard way, obviously there are heaps of differences between foil kites and inflatables which is why I didn't want to just jump in again thinking I know everything because I don't, hence taking lessons. I guess my question was more what size/ style kite would be best suited, with a few specific suggestions.

and to add i will definitely take your advice of going to local shops and the school i'm going to to take their advice as well. I jsut wanted some impartial advice as I've experienced shops in the past that offer you advice but seem to take advantage of your lack of knowledge to push stock they need to get rid of.

I agree, this unfortunately does happen sometimes so it pays to do your home work.
My advise to you (@75kg) is to get either a 11 or 12m kite for lighter winds while first learning and then you can add a smaller higher wind kite later, obviously if your learning in a high wind area use a smaller kite.
For a first kite you can't go wrong with any of these 2010/11 models:

Cab Switchblade
Naish Cult/Bolt
Slingshot Rally
Ozone Catalyst
Best Kahoona
North Rebel

Good luck mate

Hey man, stick to a delta or bow kite for starters - they offer more depower than C-kites and haver a greater wind range and definitely support the local retail community.

Depending on where you get your lessons is probably going to influence your kite choice. I learnt at Katani, they carry Liquid Force, Wainman and now CrazyFly. The CrazyFly MooWii is a sick kite and I'm pretty sure they are doing complete packages w/ lessons for $2k.

Anyway at the very least pick up a few of the different bars from the various brands and see what it feels like in your hands and check out their various safety systems. Ideally you would take the kite out for a demo ride, but considering your pretty inexperienced you don't have the luxury of this option.

For your weight I would be looking at a 9 or 10m kite, that way you will have a pretty good wind range to go out in and you will be able to grow into your kite. I wouldn't go any larger than this (i.e 12m) as you can quickly get maxed out if the wind blows any harder than 22 or so knots.
