I'm probably gonna get laughed at for this question but here goes.......
Can you kite in the rain? Does it affect how the kite flies?

I'm a beginner and keen to get out there and practise but the Melbourne summer this year hasn't been all that great so I don't wanna just sit around and wait for the ideal conditions.

I know that you shouldn't go out during a thunderstorm for obvious reasons or if there is one rolling in but what about if it's just raining?

No problem kiting in the rain. I've done it many times. A wet kite flys a little slower but no big deal.

I would suggest though when you pack up get it dry asap otherwise you'll get mould all over it and it's impossible to remove. If that's not possible dump it in salt water. Mould will not grow in the salty water but be careful, some kites when packed up wet have been known to run their colours.

Best option is to dry it when you get home to avoid any issues. I've even hung mine up in the lounge room under a fan, much to my wife's annoyance (bless her!).

The rain itself is fine, but some rain clouds come with squalls and microbursts - especially in winter - and they can be dangerous. Check out what happenned to me last winter:
