Hi,

Im very interested on buying a second hand but it has had a professional repair on the leading edge (not sure if in the bladder also)

Some people say that the kite will not fly the same and that I should stay away from it. Apart from that the kite is in excellent condition.

Any thoughts that may help a newbie buying a second hand kite?

Thank you!

yep.

buy few years old but unused from your local shop. should be 1k$ less RRP

second hand kites are very rarely worth it. no one sells a good one.

Hi jenna,
No reason why it should not fly the same after the repair.
You said it was professionally repaired. If so, find out who repaired it.
Ring and ask whoever fixed it, if the bladder was changed or repaired? Might have brand new bladder in it.(bonus)
Either way, if it was done professionally, you should have no probs.
I have repaired a number of bladders and Leading edges, with no effect to the flying characteristics or strength of the kite.
Often the kite is stronger where it has been repaired.
Maybe the super elite kiters would be able to tell the difference, but I doubt it.
"Apart from that the kite is in excellent condition". Have you seen the kite in person? Don't just believe in word of mouth or pictures.

Best of luck

Thank you, I actually just rang the guy who repaired it and the whole bladder was replaced.

I saw the kite just yesterday and its in much better condition than other second hand kites that ive seen from kite shops.

Buying a second hand from a private seller is a leap of faith though, but why buy a new kite as a beginner and specially when it looses its worth after the 1st year of use?

Thanks to you both for your replies! :)

So I was looking at some North Vegas and Rebel and several people told me to stay away from them as a beginner, so I took a Core Riot XR (is the one that had the repair done in the leading edge, but brand new bladder).

From the reviews I believe that Core Riot is not a bad kite to start off with and grow from there :)

My brand of kite is prone to le blowouts, my old 9 has 5 le repairs done by Neil at htl
Flew the same as it always did
Strangely never went where Neil repaired it
Says dividends on his quality of work

I had core riot xr3, its a nice kite to start with super easy to boost. I loved the kite.. but I wanted to do more waves, so I had to trade it in.

also core has this nice fabric that makes the kite look new for longer.

If its a good repair it will be sweet. But repaired kites are like used undies. Not worth anything. Don't pay much for it.

Also a repaired kite is a good indication the kite has had a hard time. Ask about worn stitching on the leading edge. pin holes in the canopy, fluffiness of the lines and bridles.

This is what a decent le repair should look like
Completely around and not just a patch
Even if it has just a nick

Depends on where the damage is. All leading edge repairs MUST be stitched and glued for a proper strong hold of a 6+ psi pressure hold from the main bladder.
Struts the same. But canopys can leave with only a glue repair if it's a small tear. Anything larger than 10cm long should be stitched.

Regarding the original question, if it's just a tear repair then the kite should fly same as it always did. If it's a leading edge panel replacement then that is very difficult to do and to get the panels all lined up and tensioned properly.

For tape repairs, I used to sew around big tape repairs to avoid the edge peeling up and getting sand under it.

A properly applied canopy tape repair needs no sewing at all. It will be stronger than the original fabric. Spinaker tape is 50mm wide so you've got heaps of surface area to bond. I usually just continue any existing stitching across the tape to avoid a weak spot in the existing fabric and seams. Even better if I can bury the end of a run of tape in an existing seam to avoid any end peeling.

You would only need to sew if you were putting tape on something coarse (and dissimilar to the tape) like dacron.

A tip I got from a sailor friend (open ocean racing yacht skipper). I put hot water in a bottle and "iron" the tape down to set the glue and get out any bubbles and smooth out wrinkles. His tip was to use a saucepan. I have use a metal water bottle, and a wind bottle. The water needs to be hot, not boiling.
