Where can a learner practise body drag and other beginners skills around Perth? (without being yelled at).
Tried that area North of the tall pine at Melville, which is supposed to be learner's area, and still got yelled at by an experienced kiter...

Are there learner areas around Lancelin ?

As long as you're under control and you don't body drag in an advanced/expert flat water location (safety bay pond, woodies beach 3) you should be fine in any location. In any spot you get to, you just need to avoid the main kiting area where most kiters are. Usually walking a few hundred meters upwind before entering the water does the job, sometimes downwind if there is enough room and if the wind is good enough.

I would avoid the main kiting area in Lancelin (in front of Edwards Island) as well. It's a fairly narrow area and the shallow reef is just 100 meters out or less. If you end up too far downwind you will annoy the windsurfers and your kite will stall from gusty off shore winds... Instead, drive further North in front of Lancelin Island (off Hinchcliffe Rd) goo.gl/maps/fTaM7pJhHeH2 There is usually no one there and it works best on a SW, SSW but can get a bit off-shore and gusty on a S if you end up too far downwind in the bay.

Another tip to avoid the crowds is to show up to the beach early (before the sea breeze kicks in), setup your kite, bring a book or something and wait for the wind to be strong enough. by doing this, you will typically enjoy at least 1 hour of uncrowded kiting any day.

Cheers Christian,

Now that you mentioned it.. where is Woodies beach 3 ?
This red area is generally quite shallow,

That red area you drew is beach 2. Not recommended for beginners because of the shallow reef. Beach 3 would be downwind of that (top of the image) and off-shore on a sea breeze. Beach 1 (on the right part of the image) www.waksa.org.au/locations/?view=location&id=4 is the only area suitable for learners, but it's often On-Shore so that's an issue if you're trying to learn water starts too close to the beach...

Melville beach is generally a pretty learner friendly spot (usually about half the crew there are beginners), maybe the person who you yelled at you was just a d!ck. Most people with half a brain at places like that can see a learner and avoid them. Don't be too afraid to give that spot another crack, just watch out when you're launching and landing because the beach is very small, and the wind is very gusty around the shoreline. Also, never hold your kite above the beach/road, always walk with it above the water.

If you want to try some other spots, and If you don't mind a bit of a drive, head down to Shoalwater bay in Rockingham.

One of the most beginner friendly spots in Perth. Fairly safe beach for launching/landing, nice consistent winds and fairly flat water. Most of the crew there will be happy to help you launch and land also.

Otherwise at the back of the pond in safety bay isn't bad either, just don't go in the pond or you'll likely cop a heap of abuse.

Thanks, I was thinking about driving to Lancelin this weekend. Shoalwater is a bit closer so I may try it first.

Cheers Luther,

Quinns sounds handy (I'm in Padbury).
That would be the area North of marina?

So it is NE today and everything is upside down. Pinnaroo is full of dirt and will pick up some annoying swell, and I can imagine Mullaloo as well.
I'll go and annoy people at Melville today...
