where are good locations to practice in perth, I've taken a few lessons so hopefully not too much of a danger to myself or others but need a safe spot to do some body dragging and practice/mess up water starts. Where are the newbees like me doing the hard yards, thanks

I'ts important to find somewhere that's safe for a newbie and where there are other more experienced kiters round to help with launches and landings and maybe tips and advice, but I think picking your time is also just as important.

As a learner you need a bit more space to crash your kite/learn to relaunch from the water and so you don't get spooked by others motoring past. There's a big difference between pumping up at 2:30 than 4:30 or 5:00, if the conditions allow i would recommend trying to get out before the afterwork rush.

As a noob I found the river a bit stressful, or me found the beaches a better option.

suppose it depends on where you live but +1 for safety bay. outer side of the pond however not inside . good sandbars for greater confidence. Often on/crosshore. Heading out towards Penguin Island is usually reasonably quiet so you're not in everyone's way but enough ppl around to assist with launching etc. If you're only at the body dragging stage then I reckon Pengo's side is much better as it's an easier walk back up the beach and given it's more often crosshore there you'll probably get more time in the water practicing rather than walking. Suppose just the usual need to be mindful of the school which will be there on weekends some weekdays.

Found woodies to be a bit crowded and hard to get out to start getting on your board, but will definitely give safety bay the big thumbs up!

If you are heading to Safety Bay then DONT go to the Pond.
The Pond is the inside of the spit that runs out from the Yatch Club.
This is an experienced kiters only zone - by local council regulations.
The outer side of the spit - the ocean side is great.
But nothing beats Shoalwater as a training ground. Its inside the islands from Pengos Cafe north. A nice enclosed bay. It can get choppy but never waves or swell. IMO the top spot for beginners in Perth (close to).
There are schools operating at both sites so please be courteous of kiters under instruction & of course other newbys there honing their skills as well.

Agree. Shoalwater is great for learning. A bit choppy, but no swell and plenty of space - nearly 1km of bay to mess up water starts. And when your best efforts turn to sh** and you're ready to give up, there are usually other recent beginners around to encourage you to keep trying!
