Hey guys and gals,

I know I might be opening a can of worms on this one, but I am curious to know many Sydney-siders kite through winter and what are people's opinions of learning during this time.

I have been reading a lot of people talking about "The Season" which no doubt refers to the warmer months and more consistent winds they bring being the best time to kite, which is totally understandable. However I have also read a few times where people have almost poped an artery stressing over the thought of anyone kiting in the "Off Season" eg the colder months where the wind is obviously not as consistent, can be gustier and usually not the direction they are use to kiting in during summer etc.

Now I have spoken at great lengths with several people I know that are very experienced kiters and they all had the same opinion of there being no such thing as "The Season" per-say and all will happily kite all year round at their local. When posed the question of a newbie learning during winter, again all had the same opinion that there is no reason why not. As long as you use common sense (which should be applied all the time anyway) and don't go out in inappropriate winds, ie direct off, too gusty/choppy etc and make sure you are suited up for the conditions with steamer wetty etc. Then they see no reason why not, after all, wind is wind so why waste it .

Personally I tend to agree and can not see the point in wasting so many months without getting out there. Of course there are going to be fewer days that have suitable wind, but no reason not to get out there when the wind is up.

Pfftt, don't worry about the 'season'...
If its windy get out there. You may also want to find a spot that works in a westerly. Pretty common for intense winds in this direction, just need to find a good spot for it...

There is an onshore or NE seabreeze wind season along the East Coast south of Bundy, but the wind in winter can be excellent, with lots of southerlies (side shore) and SW (side to offshore) and W (offshore). However there are many spots to kite in these wind directions, you just need a wetsuit. Definitely keep kiting over autumn/winter!

Thanks guys, case and point i guess

I must just be stumbling over the internet trolls that figure it's too cold for their soft skin so it must be that no one should kite during winter haha

I'll definitely keep going over winter, want to get as much experience under my belt as I can. Time for me to stop being the photographer of the group and get out there for a change, now to train my wife how to get the pics instead lol
