I'm looking to get a couple of kitesurfing lessons in Sydney. About 8 years ago (I think) I had a lesson at KitePower, but it was a group lesson and didn't get much time body dragging! A few months later I had a lesson in Noosa, and got up on the board (very briefly!) a couple of times.

My experience is some landboarding when I was younger. I have a flexifoil blade 4.9, so I have fairly decent general kite skills, but have only flown LEI in the couple of lessons I had a long time ago.

Where would you recommend for lessons? I see KitePower is still going, and it looks like the lessons are one-on-one these days. There are a few other groups around too though.

I will soon be moving to the eastern suburbs beaches, but not to any beaches where kitesurfing is allowed! So I don't expect this to be a huge part of my life. But I'd love to have enough lessons that I can feel confident heading out with my own gear, and perhaps taking it with me when I head to slightly more tropical waters of the world! Would shops be happy with something like one lesson (perhaps more), then a second lesson after I buy my own gear?

I was looking at this kit from KitePower. http://www.kitepower.com.au/cabrinha-vector-2373.html

Cheers,

Ian

A couple of other quick questions too:

Have kites become a lot easier to water-relaunch in the last 6-8 years?!

The bans at Waverly Council beaches... I've heard that you can go out if you're back before the flags go up. Is that true?

Hi Ian,

It is a pretty good deal for new kit.

Talk to kitepower for lessons as well, they do one on one. You might be able get a good deal. PM if you want some other names.
Botany Bay is a good place to learn and there are plenty of beach's outside of Randwich Council that are great.

Mate, welcome to the sport. One problem...

"So I don't expect this to be a huge part of my life."

You got bucklys of not becoming addicted and not kiting every spare second you can and praying for wind like the rest of us.

Wait and see...

1. Yes, kites are a lot safer and easier to relaunch these days.

2. Don't go out at Bondi. ESPECIALLY IF YOU ARE A BEGINNER. And it is not permitted even outside flag time.

3. Kiting is very restrictive at Maroubra. ie surf club nazis and bra boys.

4. Kiting is not permitted in Sydney Harbour.

I can vow for lessons from KP, they are 1 on 1 and the instructors are brilliant.
I've learnt a tonne from my lessons with KP and the staff there are always happy to spend the time talking you through the gear and making sure you've got the right gear for what you need. They have kite boarding packages that have everything in the kit you need to get you up and going and are a brilliant value.

As mentioned above becareful where you kite around Sydney, there are some places that would be great spots but are banned by councils. Have a look on here for some ideas of the more regular/popular spots where you will usually find a few fellow kiters that are happy to help you out while you are still learning www.google.com/maps/d/viewer?mid=1LA3B1H3pr16pm9y2fVsBWDeL9C8&ie=UTF8&hl=en&source=embed&msa=0&ll=-30.529145,153.226318&spn=1.65604,2.334595&z=8&dg=feature

Also as Kitcho said, good luck with the whole not getting addicted to the sport idea. Pretty sure I was saying the same thing last season, I now check seabreeze forecast every morning before getting out of bed to see whether I call in sick or not hahaha

In theory we had the possibility of wind yesterday: I went to Narrabeen and unintentionally practised self rescue
In theory we have wind today: At work at 6am .... Kurnell or Dolls Point are looking good
In theory we have wind tomorrow: Will be at work at 6am .... Narrabeen should be good
In theory we have a little something on saturday: Nobbies in Newcastle is a possibility
In theory we have nothing on sunday: but I live in hope

Hardly an addiction.

Hi bigtone saw you out at narra Yesturday next time your kite goes down like that in light wind try having your feet in the board in the start position this will help with keeping tension
In your lines and make it heaps easy to launch your kite in light winds

Cool, thanks. I should used the last knots on rear lines and not been pulling so hard on the bar. I certainly demonstrated the reverse wing effect.

Do Jeep School rent the beach? There seems to be group of BWS kites coned off and a gang of people familiar with the instructor... Not sure what the instruction/after support is like? The was one guy dragged down the beach and didn't pull his QR, to the amusement of a watching instructor... Got a mixed view about it and wonder if other people can vouch for the school or best look at another?

Would be good if the schools could be rated somehow...

Watched a lesson from Kite Power, where the guy was struggling with little wind... And also seen some good stuff happening at Dolls Point, but told that it gets a bit busy...? Any advice?

Hi mate. I only recently started and went with the 'jeep' school for lessons. They guys name is nick and he did a bloody good job. I had two three hour lessons and when I'm not ditching the kite in some surf I can get up for a bit. If ur interested his company is kite sessions. Just google it :)
