Hi All

Had a couple of lessons yesterday with Matt at Windsup. Would highly recommend him. Someone who clearly cares about the well-being of both his students, and other kite and beach users. I had a great time and cant wait to go out again.

I was having a look at all the nice shiny new gear on the sand and hearing figures that were way outside my price range. Since I am clearly going to have to go for second hand gear, I was hoping you guys could point be at the brands and models or the popular gear. I was using a Naish Park (2011 I think) which I liked very much. I also noticed some North Rebels amongst the group. Are there any other makes and models people would recommend?

Similarly for boards, I'm thinking I would need a twin tip, not to small as I'm 6ft and 80kg. Any recommendations?

Thanks for the help. Can't wait to get out there again!

Tom

Hey Tom

Glad to hear you're enjoying it. I was around your weight, maybe a few kg heavier when I started on a Cab switchblade 12m, and a Liquid Force Recoil 136. Am now 85kg and 186cm. I've little experience on other kites, and am just hitting my third season, so this is just my 2c. The Cab was pretty good, but I found that it was of limited usefulness for someone like me who only keeps the one kite, as it has a fairly narrow wind range. While I was often correctly powered at the start of the session, I was way overpowered at the end of a session when the breeze picked up- lots of sessions ended up feeling more like an episode of survivor rather than fun and safe. I also used to break a few pulleys, which was a real pain, and could be a bit unsafe if it happened when out too wide.

After a season I switched to a 2010 Rebel 10m (use same board). Much happier with this, and the build quality and reliability seems better. Similar bottom end (gets going in about same wind), but much more top end range, which feels safer and more comfy even when the wind really picks up, and also when on land. Safety and comfort = more fun. Probably more responsive too (though this is probably not such a good thing for a novice, given you're likely to make plenty of mistakes with your kite control and a more responsive kite may reward you with a spanking). Water relaunch slightly easier with the Cab, but not bad at all with the Rebel. My board seems ok in chop/ small waves and flat water; ok for general free ride but probably not super high performance.

Cheers, Brian

Hey Tom. Excellent advice from Briz, Rebel is an excellent kite. You're likely to lose a couple of kilos if you stick at it, so you could go as small as a 133 board, though larger boards are far easier to learn on. Your local wind conditions will play a large part in your kite and board size so advice from locals is the way to go.

Thanks for the replies guys. Helps a lot to get nice easy to understand advice!

I notice a few Blade Vertigos for sale, 2009, 10 and 11. Any comment on how suitable they are for beginners?

He mate. I just started about a month ago and got all my gear for 1400 bucks. A new cabrinha prodigy board a new waist harness and a 2011 cabrinha convert 9m. It is a beginner kind of kite. Easy to learn on. Easy relaunch, very powerful (my instructor was very surprised)! Buy all your gear in one place and they might do you a good deal.. I got my harness for free and a discount on my board! Negotiate. Do it Bali style! You'll be surprised.

Hmm, that is a good price. All the guys on the beach were talking about $2200-2500, which left me a bit depressed. I suppose they just went into the shop and said yes to everything. I'll see what I can do. Also have a mate at work who knows a few people and might be able to get me a good deal

I went for a GRIFFIN aussie design cheaper then all the big brand name kites
2012 model has super auto relaunch

ring around maybe get some new 2011 gear, negotiate :)

seems second hand gear sells at a premium! tho there are some good bargains

I got every thing for much less then $2k

There is some info and indicative pricing on gear here: kitesurfing-handbook.peterskiteboarding.com/gear

And secondhand gear here: kitesurfing-handbook.peterskiteboarding.com/gear/second-hand-gear

A 10 or 12 m kite could be the go, and get a twin tip board that is a bit longer (e.g. 145cm) rather than shorter as its easier to learn on and good for downwinders etc.

The $2200 to $2500 does seem a bit steep. Sure, you can get gear for that price but it would be all new and premium stuff. I don't know if you should even really go for that since as a newbie, you will be crashing the kite a lot and damaging a brand new kite that costed you a fortune is not a pleasant feeling.

The only thing that I would deff buy new if I was short of money would be a harness. Reason being you really want a harness to fit perfectly and it should be comfy. Also you don;t want it to have any wear and tear and since a harness is the thing that takes all the weight.....well, you see what I mean. A harness should only have to cost about $200 to $250. As I said in my last post I got mine for free.

What I've heard is... Don't buy a kite that is more than 3 years old. They do wear

If you buy all your gear in one place they can do you a package deal price. You'll be surprised how much margin they have on that gear.

Tom, there are good deals to be had on run out models. I recently picked up a Bandit 3 10m brand new for a grand. The B5 is out now and anyone with old stock will sell for this price. The same goes for most models. Used B3's in good nick were going for about 800-900 and I just made a couple of calls and tracked down old but new stock. People that pay full price do so because they want the latest model.

with the switchblades dont get a 2010 or below. the kite is good but the bar is really far to reach when in depower. the rebels are very similar but without this issue. if you go for a park make sure you go a size higher. for example a park 11 got the same power to a rebel or switchy size 10. i just change my switchy for a park and you really notice the difference and i advise you to go for a bow for learning. dont spend more than $1600 for the all package. you can find plenty of good and cheap gear in the buy and sell section here. good luck and enjoy

Hmm, ok, so it wont take a genius to work out how I'm compiling this list (I've just spent about 2 hours slowly cruising through the Buy & Sell), but I'd be interested to hear opinions on some of these:

2011 Naish Park 10m (have already flow one of these, seemed nice to me)
2010 Flexifoil Ion 4
2010 and 2011 Fluid ATV 12m
2009 and 2010 Cabrinha Switchblade 12m
2008 North rebel

Am looking for a kite suitable for a (quick learning!) beginner Would love to hear any feedback anyone can give. Thank you for the comments I have already received!
