Hi,
I am looking at buying my first board this week and was wondering if there is much difference between say a 5 year old board and a new board from a beginners perspective. I know kites changed dramatically from 08 which is why I bought an 09 kite. basically I am hoping I can get away with a cheap old board for this season then buying a brand new setup next year in a package deal. Is there anything to look out for with second hand boards

It's easier learning on a bigger board then migrating to the right size once proficient.
There will always be someone learning who you can sell the board to afterwards.

Lots to be said for beginners buying an older board.
1) you can go a bit bigger which will help.
2) bigger cheap boards dont drop value much at all.
3) almost impossible to pick the board thats 'The One' for you as a beginner.
(difficult even a season or 2 down the track as the choice is huge and differences can be subtle)
Bigger boards used to be dogs but there are bigger new boards out now that you may well never want to sell. They perform so well you can just keep them for light wind days. Probably others around as well but try looking at the Shinn King George. At 140 or 144 they are surprisingly responsive. I hate big boards but the King George doesnt have all the old downsides.

As puppet said, go big to learn and you will probably keep it. I still have my learner board which I bring out when the winds are light.

Thanks for all your info I'm 90kg so I have just bought a 2009 148 cabrinha prodigy which from all reports sounds like it will be perfect.
