Hi guys, some very useful posts about here, lots to take in before we get out there after our lessons.

My question is about equipment sharing, my girlfriend and I are learning together atm and we are thinking about the first equipment we need to get out and perhaps sharing a few things before we get serious about spending up big.

We watched a couple down the beach share a kite (and a board i think)...Is this a good idea to get started, learn and play about? Or are we better off learning on more specialized equipment separately so that we wont grow out of it too quickly?

Im ~80kg and she is ~60kg so there is a bit of a weight difference to consider too.

Im sure the instructors will have lots of advice for us too, but its always good to get some different opinions.

Thanks!

20kg difference translates to 2-3m difference in recommended kite size.
If your in Perth then you'd probably be wanting a 10-11m for your 80kg self, and she'd probably be best off with something ~7-8m at 60kg.

You could just share equipment... or you could just get one set each and maximise your time on the water by sharing and borrowing each others kites when the conditions suit them. For example, light winds she gets your 11m. High winds, you get her 8m.

Everyones happy!

I am a newbie too and tried this... it lasted 1 week... and still causes problems because he keeps stealing my 9m when the winds up and then I don't have a kite (so i'm sneakingly going to buy a 7m metre this weekend - probably garishly pink so it can't be poached when the winds up)

I would have no problem using a pink kite. Its not like he's going to pick up with you glaring from the beach anyway

I finally got my own kite last weekend after sharing and borrowing for some time and I have to say the difference it makes is enormous! Now I don't have to wait for my turn, I don't have to feel guilty about crashing someone else's gear and the kite is just the right size and style for me so win win win, my confidence is up and I am improving much faster!

Sharing is great because it can be expensive to get started but I don't think it will last very long before you would be progressing at different speeds! I bought second hand to make it more affordable and am loving my new/old kite.
