Hi Guys

Guessing ya get this all the time lol...but just joined up and looking for any and all advice on purchasing my first kite plz.....

I Just finished a weekend of kiting lessons in Cairns Qld and am now keen to get my first set of gear and start mastering the sport (fingers crossed) The lessons were very well done with Kiterite of Yorkeys Knob on a Cabrinha 9m xbow (Really liked the Cabs bar!!!) which was enough to learn the kite skills on and get to my feet but not enough to stay up and start moving very far....Saftey first which was good lol

I have been given a slingshot 139 board and waist harness from a mate so now need to buy my first kite....My instructors at the end recommended a 12m and i recently dropped in for another chat with em and the best thing they have atm for my size apparently is one of their "brand new" runout sale priced Cabrinha 2012 12m Switchblades...but is a bit expensive even at $1800 for me unfortuantely...

Im a fit 90KG guy and most of my riding will be in Cairns - Yorkeys Knob / Kurrimine Beach / Townsville - Alva Beach and Cungara...any locals advice ???

Any alternative ideas / suggestions / recommendations of kites and ranges of kites etc etc etc from kiters and hopefully dealers/sellers of brand new or used good condition kites would be greatly appreciated (the more the better plz) as ive come to realise how much range and preferance is definately out there in kites...and it is a bit confusing and intimidating first time round to be honest lol...as with everyone i want to make the most informative and best guided decision for my first kite as i will prob only have the one kite for a while and dont wanna be wasting all my time on the beach sitting there waiting for wind to pickup/die due to a poor decision on my part......

Cheers Guys

Hi Tim. The search function will give you a lot of info. A quick reply: 12m sounds good for that part of QLD and 90kg. You will want a smaller kite down the track, say 9-10m. Unless you get an absolute bargain, used is the way to go for your first kite as you are likely to give it a bit of a beating. The switchblades are a good allround kite, regardless of what most West Oz riders say :) I ride F-One Bandits but they can be a bit too responsive for a beginner IMO.
$1800 is a fair bit to spend on a first kite. If you hunt around you will get a good deal. You don't have to go this season's model. As a beginner, you would find it hard to tell the difference between this season's and 3 season's ago. I once picked up a brand new 10m Bandit 3 for a grand as the Bandit 5's were just about to come out.
As always, local advice is the best, and as you have a mate who is a kiter, make sure you run any purchases through him before buying.
Enjoy, you will get hooked very quickly, Steve.

For learning, a bigger, more stable kite is easier. The bandits are also quite responsive, so if you have a stack and pull on one end of the bar for instance, the bandit is going to react quicker and with more oomph than say the switchy. Bigger kites react slower so are a bit more forgiving. The price on the B4 is good, as long as it has bar and lines. But I'd suggest concentrating on an 11 or 12m. What year is the kite you're looking at? Make sure you get plenty of photos' and ask specifically about any damage. For $900, I'd expect something in excellent nic.
As well as the Cab, I'd probably look at a North Rebel.

The ozone catalyst is well worth a look, good from begginer to intermediate, plenty of schools use the catalyst , which is a good testerment to their build quality and ease of use, ive flown the bandit 4 nice kite with allround abilities like the catalyst, just be aware of the bandit 4 bar corrosion issues , make sure you get the replacement bar, the rebel is also a great kite but the 5th line isnt the best when your gonna be ditching the kite in the drink a fair bit, as it has a higher tendancy for snagging, not bagging the kite as its great , the are plenty of good quality kites out there, ive given a wide range of kites a trial, of the small brands the mutiny kites were the best build quality ive seen and flew really nice, dont go for a kite thats too cautious in size as youll discover you need that pull to get you through all your cock ups, not having enough power will have you dropping back into the water

Hey Tim!

I am a newbie myself, but I had a lot of help from an experienced kiter when it came to hunting down second hand kites.

Questions you want to ask when buying second hand are
-are there any pinholes, tears or other damage (such as wear) to the kite
-how much has it been used
-all valves sound (not leaking). you could ask the person to pump it up, leave it over night and then conclude if the pressure has dropped or not
-first owner or not
-what conditions are the lines in
-does it come with a bar/pump
-why selling

also remember, that when buying second hand through a shop you sometimes can get warranty on the kite (e.g. if it is an ex demo)

I was also advised, that if buying privately, and the kite you get is not as described, you have some protection under the Trade practices act and consumer law (entitled to your money back)

as I am new to this as well I cant comment very much on other kites, but I hope this info helps you a bit in the process

happy hunting!
