I recently bought a 5.5' Nugget (2015) as I want to have donething for those lighter wind days, as well as trying a surfboard style board. Problem is I have no surfing experience. Was thinking on trying the Nugget at the cable park to get a feel for the board, is that a good idea or is there a chance I can damage the board? Should I just try it with my kite?
Thanks for your help!

Just try it with the kite. The main issue you're going to have with a directional as opposed to twintip is changing directions and learning to tack.
Not much point using it at the cable park since you're only going to be riding one direction and the pull of cable is pretty different to a kite so you don't really get the same feel.

I'd recommend just having a crack somewhere on some fairly flat water until you get a feel for the board, before you try going out in waves etc.

The hardest part about the transition from twin tip to surfboard is weight distribution
Twin tips are ridden /driven off the back foot
Surfboards require more pressure on the front foot

The nugget is one of the best boards for making this transition the wider tail makes it more forgiving if you end up riding on the back foot a bit much and will make it much easier to get up and going.
Many people using a normal surfboard for the first time either bog down and go nowhere or they end up riding very slowly with the nose pointing to the sky.

I recently got a great deal on a nugget from one of the shops in Perth. I'd never ridden a full directional before and love how easily I'm getting the hang of it.
I now spend half my session on the nugget - preparing for my foray into real waves, and the other half on the twinny.
When I make the change during the session it's fairly embarrassing finding the twinny legs again!
The weight distribution is very different.

The nugget? I love it, but it's my first directional, so I cant review it. But, it's just too easy mate.

You will do what most us did.... you will kite in one direction, get to the end of the run and jump off the board. Turn it around and come back in...then repeat.

Start in some flat water....makes it easy and removes the pressure of being trashed by a wave.

You will soon get interested in going toeside and learn how to swap your feet round.

Nugget is a great board to learn on. Great to surf on as well.

I have a strapped and a unstrapped nugget.

What a great day, super stoked! Went out on the Nugget today, got up first time, and did a carving turn to toeside first up! Unbelievable feeling. The board is soooo forgiving, a pleasure to ride, even toeside. Thanks for all the advice. Now I just have to work on my upwind ability and deep water starts on it as that was a little bit lacking today...
