Hi all,

I'm currently doing lessons in St Kilda and want to gather my own gear before getting all the practice in with my wife who is also learning.

I have picked up a 2009 Griffin kite 10.5m and a 2012 Griffin Bar. Now the task of finding a board.
I've been looking at a Cabhrina 2008 board which was 128cm but I am thinking it might be a bit too small to begin with.

Here's my stats:
height: 172cm
weight: 60kg
kite: see above
desired style: a bit of everything for the moment so a good all-rounder for a beginner would probably be best, and perhaps something my wife can also use.
She's 159cm tall, 48kg - also a beginner.

Any advice on good brands/models to suit my needs? I'm basically after a good all-rounder board for a beginner.

Thanks very much for any help you can provide!

It's always easier to get up and going on a larger board. But, for your weight and your wife's weight, a 128 is probably a happy medium. Ideally, a 130-133 would suit you and a 126-130 your wife. You will end up with a board each though, so you're probably better off getting a 132ish, fine for you in the long run and a nice big board for your wife to learn on. Brands aren't that big of a deal early on, anything in good condition at a good price to start with. Comfortable bindings that suit both your feet sizes I would imagine is quite important.

I'm hearing what your saying, there are alot of options and peoples opinions to compete with. im around 85kg and 186cm and just starting out, im up and riding on a 142cm board, im not sure if im to get this size board as my first or something a little smaller?

As for kites im going to try get myself a good second hand 10m for my first, my instructor has said 10m should do most of what i want to get started but a quiver with an 8m, 10m and 12m will cover me for all wind ranges. would this be correct?

In my usual serch on the web for more info i have come across this site = riggeek.com/gear-calculator/for-kitesurfers
the kite sizes seem spot on but not to sure on its board size recomendations?

ps. sorry for hi-jacking your thread but didnt see the need to start a new one for the same line of queary.

Welcome to kitesurfing guys.
Patchy - id suggest you try as many boards as you can before buying (and kites for that matter). So many good kites out there with impressive wind ranges that you could easily get away with 2 kites (mine are an 8 and 11m)

Id def say getting a decent kite is a priority over a board, then once you get better you'll know whether you need the larger board (if the kite aint all that grunty) or whether a smaller one is better cos your kite and riding skills have improved and the chosen kite is a powerful beast

fly safe

On the board size side of things I would not go too big that's for sure. Patchy I'm about your size perhaps a bit lighter and trained on the same size as you and I ended up getting a Crazy Fly Raptor Pro 137/41. There are probably better boards out there but this seemed reasonably priced / had good reviews etc and I've been happy with it for sure. I'm now really glad I didn't go a bigger or heavier TT as after a few months on the water I'd definitely be regretting it now I think..... could have even gone a bit smaller myself. Still have soooooo much to learn that's for sure but you'll probably be surprised at your progression and perhaps a bigger/heavier board may hold you back when you get to the boosting/basic tricks stage.

cheers for the advise guys...
Should I be considering a hybrid or SLE for my first kite, alot claim to have a high depower but also claim to be great for unhooked riding in their reviews. I was under the impression that riding unhooked you dont have depower (I could be very wrong here)...

So is it best to invest in a bow kite or a hybrid/sle as your first? Im not too keen on handing over my hard earned on a kite that im only going to grow past as with time im going to want something with speed and power.

That board is not a "bit too small" it's WAAAAAYYYYYY TOO SMALL!

If you look at kitesurfing like surfing , then what do they teach on ? Boards over twice to 3 times as big in volume as what the pros ride. In kiteboardings case some of the pros even ride 138s.
144 x 43 min for you 140 x 41 for your wife.

Learning is all about time riding. A big board will triple this for you and when you've more experience you can all ways grab this board from your quiver for lighter breezes.
Your kite is not that big at 10.5. I have actually been riding a 155 x 47 2008 north phantom in 12-18 knots on a 2009 7m cabrinha convert and having a blast. Honestly I would get the biggest board you can get. My Convert wouldn't normally get me out of the water until 18-20 kts on my 136 x41 custom.
The 128 spells Struggletown for you, you don't want that trust me, boooorrrrinnnng - keep searching. there's much more suitable stuff out there. Good luck.

Patchy,

Hold on to the 142, I actually think it's too small to learn on but it's better than a 135.
that 10 suggestion is a good one but you'll need a big board to get a big range out of it.
a 7, 10, 14 would be a good range unless you can afford a 17 core to replace the 14. they have a great high range. and with the big board you'll be flying in 8 knots and be able to comfortably kite until you can get your 10 out!.
Keep in mind all kite 'sizes' are specific to their makers style and they all have different powers and ranges.

a 6 BWS will go where an 8 Rally will in low and high range, but feel different.
a 10 BWS will blow most 12s out of the park for power but not have the high end range, ie at 20kts they're a handfull....Some 10s will handle 30kts no problem. Welcome to kite geat 101 lol!

Ditto to pattiecannon

128 would be on the small size for most super experienced kiters at your size/weight. Only a valid choice if you know you prefer a smaller than average board.
For a beginner it would be a really silly choice. Extend your learning time by months.
It would probably suit your wife once shes intermediate level but smaller than she needs to make the most of learning time.
If you go oversized for a first board for you both you may as well go BIG as all you want is something to stand on while you learn the art of flying the kite skillfully.
Keep it as a shared lightwind board or flick it on & buy new.
60kgs - by the book around 131x40 (134x39)
48kgs - 128x39
Like everything it depends heaps on personal variations. Where you kite, style of kiting, kite size, plus most all your personal preference. Some like bigger than advised some like smaller.
No correct answers until you have had enough experience to fill in all the blanks.

Hi guys. Just thought I would ask seeing as the topic of board size came up..

I am learning on a 132 x 41 CrazyFly, and I weigh 85kg, 181cm tall. I realise it may be a tad small...
I found it troublesome to begin with, and have now finally gotten the hang of it on my goofy stance and my natural stance needs a little work. I can waterstart 80% of the time, and am starting to play around with transition slides and going upwind.

Would I benefit from trying to get a larger board? Or am I already over the learning hump and can stay on the 132cm?
