My new kite has what seems to be a ridiculous feature called "Oh-****" handles.

If were in danger it is far safer to pull the quick release emergency which is always located at your belly button unlike the "oh **** handles" which are located on a bar that may pivot when you try to grab a handle. If were in an emergency and missed the "oh ****" handles the first time it could destroy me! Quick release seems unrivaled in safety.

It seems a feature i will never use.

Can someone illustrate the use of them please/how and when they are most useful?
Also can they aid in self landing? on my Naish i pull one of my my back lines (depending on what side i land on) to self land, however on this new kite (Kahoona V2) they have an attachment on the lines a few metres up making me unable to determine which centre line to pull.
I will however use the emergency line to self land once i find out what side of the kite it is attached to.

Hope this makes sense.

If your try to land the kite with the oh **** handles then the kite might loop on you, my kite also has them and I was wondering the same thing. basically you should only use the handle when you think Oh ***** . its meant for going unhooked, since there is no limit as to how far the bar can go up the lines when you pull the handle it should flag out the kite. Do not pull them when still attached, you might kite loop and get hurt.

Thats what i found. I have not used them yet, i don't think i will either

Can you post a picture of the bar setup?

Not all oh **** handles are created equal...

I think they are there to flag the kite out and completely depower the kite where as using thechicken loop doesn't kill all the power.
Similar to a five line kite v four line.
When landing i believe your supposed to hook your safety to the OSR and throw the chicken loop and flag out the kite.
Having not done any of this myself further clarification may be needed.

On some older kites, you used to attach your leash to the Oh Sh!t handle but that's rare now. They're really a secondary safety.
i.e. your leash has snapped, a 40 knot gust has hit you, you're being dragged towards some rocks but there are a bunch of 5 year old kids directly downwind of you, preventing you from releasing your kite completely
In this situation, grab a handle, release your bar and hang on.

So yeah, not much everyday use but they're named that for a reason.

(I can't comment on their usefulness for self landing for Best kites)

They are just there to give more options in depowering the kite or flagging it out. Thats because the emergency depower system on your kite does not depower the kite enough in the bigger sizes.
The "red" line does not flag to one front line AFAIK, it flags to both front lines, so be very careful using it to self land, test it on a clean beach in lighter winds.
Put your kite on one side of the window, with a tip on the beach, the pop the safety at the chicken loop.
Or have an experienced rider check the system for you.
If its the red line bar that comes with that kite, it works how I said.

It seems obvious now but wasn't at the time, if you ride suicide and still have the leash on, then pulling an OhSht line can flag the just enough to put it in a lazy loop even if you are unhooked, not really what you want.
