By most standards i may be considered to old for this caper. But ive seen a few grey hairs on the water having a ball so what the hell.
The missus and i are both keen to have a go,have some fitness ( not much )
But we live at rosebud Vic and it seems one of the best spots around for this sport so why waste it.
Anyway i was talking to a few guys kiteing at rosebud about lessons and they where sure someone down here did them, just not sure who. So if any one knows someone on the peninsula thats qualified or experienced enough with good patience skills please let me know

Can't help you with the local instructor, but can say that I suspect you won't be the oldest person to learn. Get out there and enjoy :)
(make sure you get those lessons)

Hey Rustan how old do ya call old i started when i was 41 and i have a freind that started when he was 62 so the main question you have already answered are you a average swimmer can you do a small jog around the block do you love the out doors if ya said yes to the above you are already there . Or when the weather turns to poo horriable howling wind and you dont want to be out side that is where we all want to be and apreciate those days too the most . Get out in it you wont regret it cheers

I just need to find someone, ideally local for some lessons so i dont look a complete fool or worse

Good on you Rustan. I'm 56 and been kiting for 8 years. Just got home from a kiting holiday in the Cocos Islands. You're never too old.

Can you share some of your Cocos experience for those of us that are Cocos challenged.

At the start of my 2nd season i was sitting on the beach trying to decide if I should head out as the conditions were 'iffy' (and I was being a wuss).

I had been watching a dude doing simple but smoove trstitions and turns in front for a while. He comes in to land, takes off his helmet and was at leat 60!

"Hell - if he can handle it I better kn get out there!" I thought.

Hey runstan, a very basic level of fitness and ability to swim a couple hundred meters is all you need. Err.. plus lessons of course. After the initial 'new muscles' soreness, you only need to go as hard as you want to really.

Get amongst it and (like I did at mid 30's) you will actaully feel younger and more agile soon enough.

Enjoy.

Hey Rustan

I converted from the poles ( 20 + years - freeride and speed sailing) to the teabags around July last year and despite some kite lessons 4 years ago at Merimbula I was keen to get a refresher or two. it didnt quite turn out like I expected as I live in Gippsland and at the time there was no local instructor - and travelling to Melb was always going to be a hit and miss affair - 2.5 hrs away is never good when trying to predict the conditions!!
At Rosebud I would have thought the SHQ and or RPS and or Kite power etc could give you a hand?
In the end I relied on - my learnings from 3 years ago PLUS good DVD's and now I'm a converted poledancer !!- but this is not the best way to learn!!

Clint in Paynesville (near Bairnsdale) is now our local instructor which i wish I had had access to when i decided to have another crack at converting - for east Gippy people he's the man to touch base with. BUT in you neck of the woods is there a more local person than the shops I mentioned above?? (even Sandringham is alot more local that 2.5 hrs away ??)

I'm a young 48 and enjoying the conversion - only I have few (read - NO)aspirations of doing 21 yr old tricks like multiple rotations and handle passes - too old and sensible for that ****!! .

Good luck with your quest!!

Cheers, lambie

Well i tried Find boards in frankston but no joy. There instructor has gone back O/S and they seem to be getting out of kite gear. I didn't check there price on gear but the guy was very keen to do any deal to shift stock. I did notice some good brand harness and board gear, so if you know what your after maybe drop in. For me it was the wrong end to start at.
Its looking like one of the stkilda based schools
