So my partner came across an old kiteboard that was being thrown out, its got some cosmetic damage but that seems about it. However it's missing fins and being new to kiteboarding we're not sure what fins to get or where to get them from. The board is a Slingshot Rocket Rail (we think - some missing letters here n there), and has four slots at one end for fins. Tried looking around online for fins but they seem pretty expensive especially as we're not sure if they're even the right ones!

What fins can you recommend and any idea where to get them from? Probably secondhand is best/cheapest as although very keen on the sport now - might not be in a few months time.

Live in Sydney but currently in Cottesloe, Perth for a month or so.

Get down to the local kiteboarding shop. They'll have a good selection of fins, maybe some second hand ones as well from old boards if you don't want to spend too much.

Wakeboarding fins are the same, so if you are after some cheap ones, you could even try a wakeboarding shop. You can drill additional holes through the board if your board has only one hole for the screw, 40-45mm fins should do the trick

Yuo can also learn with no fins. It makes it easier to learn to gybe.

Thanks heaps for the advice :)
Unfortunately we've come across a more pressing issue - most of the valves in the kite have come away from the inner bladder & so it cant be pumped up at the moment Trying to glue them back but keep finding more - hopefully we'll get some kiting in before heading back to sydney!

Have you had proper lessons? If not I wont help you, you bought an old kite?, and I know the cheap fix, but no lessons no advice. PM me, sailing background aint good enough. Beaches are under threat already. Yes its a wing, just like a sail, but it goes up in the air. Cheap and nasty for beginners. Look at notice to noobs thread. You could be oblivious to the dangers to yourself and others.

Ok, relax Dave, I have had three lessons in total from certified IKO trainers, 6hrs total. I am no expert - but I havn't asked how to kite, the question (which I believe was fair) relates to the hardware, which I have very little experience with (O-mighty-one). I am with you on the safety front, and I appreciate you looking out for me, however just ease up on the assumptions. Feel free to PM me should you have any doubts.

The kite was purchased second hand, however it was not an 'old' kite. Further reading has lead me to believe that this is a relatively common issue for kites have been left in the sun and heated up. Since this kite was freighted over, back of a truck/plane/train, this is entirely possible.

The kite is fixed, for others that don't want to be flamed, free advice. Tarzan makes a very affordable plastics glue, a contact adhesive. Apply to both sides allow to touch dry, and press and hold for 1minute.

As for others, very much appreciate your advice and suggestions. The board is still finless, but I have received further advice that this isn't the right board to learn on.
