I guess you mean it's doing a Hindenburg. I usually stop it slamming into the water by ripping on one of the steering lines to turn it sideways so that when it floats downwind enough to take up the slack its sideways and zooms across rather than down. Works about 89% of the time.
Yeah i used to have that problem with the kite sinking fast after i stuff up a jump what i used to do is what 7tim said and also swimming/running backward away from the kite to take up the line length faster but can still be a some rough crashes
