Hi, going for a few lessons next week, just want to know if there are any quite spots to practice after lessons that we wont be getting in the way of other kiters? Also anyone kite at any of the dams like wivenhoe or sommerset how is the wind there?

Thanks

As plummet said. Also, where are you based? Dams and lakes can be excellent. Unfortunately, winds are often inconsistant and gusty.

if ur in brisbane then sandgate/brighton are the spots to learn at. It does gets crowded but the beach in between the two spots is usually not crowded, it just means you have to walk for a bit or learn to self launch/self land.

Thanks, just dont like getting in peoples way if they are already good. I will be going for lessons around sandgate but live in south brisbane and surf a bit so keen to learn on flat then get into wave, anyone know any flatwater spots on goldy? and then to go out to the ocean can you just launch on any beaches with less people like near seaworld etc

know how you feel about not getting in people's way but the north side of brisbane sandgate/brighton and the beach in between is good advice. I myself am new and have been all over the place, Victoria Point, Wellington, Sandgate & Brighton. The advice given above is good and you do want to have people around who can help if it all goes to s**t.

For GC spots you could look at the broadwater and then narrowneck for waves, best to speak to the guys at Surffx for advice.

Good luck - might see you out there.

Where about south brisbane wise?

I live in the Tanah Merah region and find these are the closest spots

20 minutes - Victoria Point (SW-SE)
35 minutes - Wellington Point (Everything minus SSW-SSE)
40 minutes - Redcliffe/Brighton (Unsure, have only ever kited SE and NE)
45 minutes - Broadwater (N-SE)

Hope that helps,
Josh

I know you are keen to get in the surf, but stick with flat water until you are competant.

Waves and beach breaks are a whole new level of difficulty.

Vicy point is not a bad spot to learn at. Shallow, few others around, and always onshore so washed back into the quite large beach.

Redcliffe and Brighton are two very different spots. Brighton and Sandgate are perfect for learning but Redcliffe is not a place to learn how to kite.

Thompsons Beach at Victoria Point - need to watch your tides and go when it is low or half way out.

Best to speak to the local guys there as there are a couple of stakes in the water and also lots of coffee rock so hope you have some booties.

Broadwater - can't help you with that as I haven't sailed there.

Vicky point is alright but as board girl says there are a few obstacles ie boats( seen a few people coming unstuck by fly there kites in the rigging) sunken crab pots that are only exposed at low tide , these will do damage if your unlucky to hit one.
Avoided high tide to many trees to get hung up in if the poo hits the fan.
The crew down there are a good bunch and will point you in the right directions
