Hello there. I've been inspired by watching a couple of Kiteboarding Videos of very advanced riders. There seem to be two different techniques experts use to enter the water without doing the whole 'body dragging into deep water, and standard water start' thing.

1.) drop the board down on the water and rather than putting the feet in the bindings, just stepping on the board, riding off, and then inserting their feet.

2.) running up to the water and doing a mini jump, putting your feet in the bindings (as if they're doing a grab) then landing on the water and riding away.

Does anyone know of any good instructional videos or advice to help practice these? May be I should just repeatidly try it until I nail it?

Just give it a go. You will look like an idiot, but you will eventually look cool

I put my back foot in first with the kite at 12 (if I put my front foot in first, I tend to sink the nose).

Move the kite back behind you to about 11, then while moving it fast across to 12, stick your front foot in as best as you can. By the time you get your front foot in, you should be at the point of diving as per usual. You want that movement from 11 to 12 to be providing you with the lift so you don't get your ass wet before you get some forward momentum going.

Thanks Zarb, and as you know, a dry bum is a happy bum.

just to confirm, are you saying you're starting at the edge of the surf with your foot in the back strap? Or are you in the water (5cms worth) already?

I've seen plenty of people do it in enough depth for the board to float, but I am still at the kook point of where I prefer a little bit more depth as a cushioning device for when it goes wrong (which happens a LOT still). Probably shin height for me.

Roger.

Knowing you zarb, you probably did a run, back roll, land in water with board on.... ;-)

i still want to know how to not look like a kook putting boots on. its no issue given a sandbank or something but if its just a straight shore i find i have to go into bit under knee deep water and **** about trying to jam my feet in precariously tightening the shoe laces etc and its just plain dangerous. i know i can put them on on dry land then just jump but sometimes that isnt an option due to wind direction gusts etc whats a safer method please

^^^a board with straps..

If you can check out the TT race video of the gold coast PKRA in '010 or 11 or whatever year Andy Yates won it then there is a great display of taking off at a gallop that is good to watch. I still stick with the Karzan method to about 10cm. I find it's easier if the water is moving with the wind but you need a bit more wind to get it. Opposite the wind will be a better sesh but the standing takeoffs are a bit tricky

Cheers boys.

There's a good example on the Triple S video of some guy running along an elevated walkway/look out over the water, jumping over it and landing on his board... that's the end goal.

Anyway, when next see someone face planting in 10cms of water ... you know who it is.

Ruben is the guru of the flying start.
Shoots board forward then runs & does a little boost into the straps on the still moving board.
Very cool look but not as easy as he makes it look.

Another move on my wish list.

If you want to see some good examples then check out Toby Braeuer's new DVD Airstyle! It has heaps of examples/different ways of doing it. And it also 665 other cool tricks too.
