Hi All,

I wanted to share this free sample to help everyone have a better understanding of modern Kitesurfing Safety Systems. The sample focuses on information that is unfortunately rarely covered during lessons and that can make a big difference in how safe and how independent a kitesurfer can be.

It's also a good summary of most the safety advice I've been giving on this forum for many years.

In case you are wondering, yes I did get the permission to use the footage from that death looping video.

Thanks for Watching

Kite Safe

Really great video. Thanks for sharing Chris.
The only comment I would make is that really the safety system is part of the bar, not the kite. So rather than having to buy a whole new kite, it may be enough to just buy a different bar and rig it up to the old kite. As far as I am aware, any kite could be flagged out on a single line if attached to a bar with single line safety system (other than 5th line kites perhaps), or am I way off here?

Hi Kajo,

Yes you are correct, A well designed single front line safety system should flag out any 4-line kite. There are so many different brands and so many generations of bar and kites, it would be nearly impossible to formulate clear recommendations as to what bars would be a good mix with what kites, so I'm purposely avoiding giving such specific advice. There is also the difference between High V and low V which I purposely didn't cover in the video as it make things too complicated.

Many kiters are happy to use dual front line safety sytems and/or long leashes attached to the back of their harness. My goal is to help kiters (especially Newbies) understand the risks and let them decide what to do about it.

Flagging systems can also be modified, but again, this can get pretty complex and I would avoid giving specific advice about this.

Well done Christian. If you don't mind I want to share that video across my webpage and facebook page. I cannot believe that trainers don't teach this stuff! My trainer did, way back in the 2000s and he was a rare breed... I still remember that German accent... "yeh don't go ouutt in strOHHng or ligghtt winds withOUUTTt that harness knife" (sorry poor German accenting there). I might just add that an also dangerous and outdated flagging system was the single flagging line but on one of the back lines, not one of the front lines. Old Cabrinha kites had this and they are deadly spin-doctors!

Thanks. Of course, this video is public so feel free to share it as much as you like. There is also a Facebook version which you can share as well.

Yep, safety systems have evolved a lot haven't they! I was told to clip my safety leash above the chicken loop (suicide mode) when I first learned 10 years ago...

Not to mention the good old wrist leash that you couldn't reach in a drag .Just ended up not using it and letting the kite go.
