Hi,
Just after some advice on choosing a second kite size

Im currently 100kg on a 2014 14m Catalyst and ride around Botany Bay.

I figure I'll get another catalyst, just wondering if I should be looking at 10m or 12m.

And, will my bar and lines work on a smaller size? (just trying to save some cash where possible)

Cheers,

At your weight a 14 & 10 is the best combo. Then you can add an 8m for those stronger days and the possibility of a 6 for really strong days

You can happily use the bar from your 14 on the 10m

I weigh the same and between me & my partner we have a Zephyr & 14m VX, 12m Wave, 10m VX, 9m Wave, 8m VX, 6m VX & 4m Cat

A 17m Zephyr would suit you in the winds a 14m suits me. I would go higher/lighter.

Yep, it's LW season and you're point one of a ton. 17m m8, plenty good models out there an' you can use them all with your 14 cat bar.

Thanks for the input :)

I don't think I'll go bigger, actually just thinking ahead for smaller kite for next summer. Hopefully will pick up some run out deals thru winter.

Point one of a tonne! Never thought of it that way way before, sounds heavy, haha

I'm 100kg also. I run Ozone Cats in 14 and 10. They get me going from 13 to 35 knots.

10M Cat, you can def use your current bar, but it is a 54cm and the one recommended for a 10M is a 50cm, but the one you have will work, and the 10 will just steer with easier/lighter.
Drop in to KP when you are ready they have some excellent close out deals happening now and till the end of the month.

It really depends what size board you have... Im 85kg and I'm on a 135x41 twin tip and have a 17/10/8 combo. Find the zephyr is fine until 22knots was out yesterday gusting to 25 and was in control the whole time... At about 18-19 knots I'll switch to the 10...

I'm ~90kg and my 2013 Zephyr is fine up low 20s. I fly it with a 50cm Slingshot bar and get quite a workout from it but it's possible. Awesome kite.

It's hard to believe it without trying it out. I was out in winds from 16-22 knots (start of a front). And it gusted up to 25 knots (shown on the chart last sat morning in perth - not available now - from my phone anyway can check website tomorrow.)

I was the only one out on a 17, there were other 13m edges and mainly rest were 12's.

It was great cus I was powered nicely the whole time. That the point I'm trying to make. I think the board size is an important variable. Any big board and the kite would pull me off my edge and I would of been over powered.

Good to hear

At what wind speed do you put away the 14 and pump up the 10?

I'm 85 kg and ride a Speed 3 21 from <10 knots to 20 ish - I go straight from the 21 to 12 on the TT, or to a 6&8 on the surfboard. I reckon you could go either way - bigger or smaller, but I'd suggest you work out what you'd use more. An 8-10 is great but if you'd only use it a handful of times, is it better than a 17+ If you get more sessions on that ? Big kites these days aren't really "big" by old standards, they perform pretty good. I reckon anything that's gets you out as much as possible is the best.

So nicmcc whadyu get? was the wind down there good this winter?
I concur bigger would be better for you. Zephyrs are really only a 14m ki te. They have more pull than a 14m cat but compared to true LW kite they don't even get off the grass. Not in the same class as infinities, flites, contra's xr3's etc.
Now winter's over I'd defo b looking more at the 10m. My m8 is 93 kg and is on an 8 reo in anything above 19kts. He rides a 12m and a 17 the rest of the time but some days he is o'pwrd on the 12 and a 10 would be better than his 8.
Mayb you should go 11 & 8?

I went the 10m cat. Seems good, only had it up a couple of times and I don't really have much experience to compare it to anything else, but I think I've made the right choice.

Flys quicker than the 14, so I'm pretty good at crashing it

So far in my short kiting career, all my good sessions have been on my 14. The times Im out on the 10, I just feel like a massive kook and cant seem to keep the thing in control as easily as the 14.

Im kinda thinking this is because Im using the 54cm bar from my 14m...

If I stop being a tightass and just buy the correct size bar (50cm), will be easier to fly?

I run 8, 10 & 12m Cats on 2x 50cm bars (I'm 78kgs). I don't find them all that much different in terms of speed and control. 10m being my most often used.

if I'm ever at botany at the same time as you I'd be happy to lend you my spare bar for a go to see if helps.. bring on daylight savings next week yeeew!

Assuming it is probably over 20 when you get the 10 out and the kite is a lot quicker will take a bit to adjust
bar really shouldn't make any dif If you are holding in the centre
