I have previously come across the technique of slowly sending the kite - with a quick send at the end just before you take off - but only for large kites (12m + ). Watching FriendFace/instagram fairly recently, I noticed that Sam Light (slingshot rider) was using the same technique with small kites in storm front conditions.
Has anyone else tried this technique? Are you using it for specific conditions?
