your better off to practice in deep water.
shallow water gives you a false sense of security.
your progression will be much faster, if you learn in deep water.
the deep water will enable you learn to recover you board, as you learn to body drag, much faster.
as long as the wind is cross onshore, you will be able to sail to the beach, then spot your board and sail out to recover.
wear a flotation vest for extra confidence.
just stay calm and do not panic, whenever you lose your board, trust yourself, that you can get back & recover your board.
learning to body drag is one of the most important skills you will need, it can save your life, even with out a board.
Cross onshore wind is the only wind, your should kite in, as a beginner.
its all about safe kiting.
Would 110% disagree with this. Shallow water is much safer for a learner. Why would someone need to "not panic" when they could just stand up/touch the bottom etc, deep water is faaaaarrr more likely to incite a panic attack. I would be mindful of listening to these forums. There are a lot of keyboard warriors here who have no idea how to teach. Just keep at it. Its something that eventually will click. Kurnell would be a great spot, as well as first carpark although its not that shallow. Good luck!
