Hi, I was looking at this thread,
www.seabreeze.com.au/forums/Kitesurfing/Newbies-Tips-Tricks/Beginner-Learner-Spots-close-to-Sydney-NSW?page=1

I just had few lessons at Botany Bay, but struggling with water start. was looking for some other place to practice with less people and shallow waist depth. Last thread really gave a good idea on places around NSW, just wondering if anyone has more suggestions or updates on those places? I will be checking on some this summer.

Kurnell on mid to low tide will work well, there will be a few quiet spots amongst all the rock groins.

your better off to practice in deep water.

shallow water gives you a false sense of security.

your progression will be much faster, if you learn in deep water.

the deep water will enable you learn to recover you board, as you learn to body drag, much faster.

as long as the wind is cross onshore, you will be able to sail to the beach, then spot your board and sail out to recover.

wear a flotation vest for extra confidence.

just stay calm and do not panic, whenever you lose your board, trust yourself, that you can get back & recover your board.

learning to body drag is one of the most important skills you will need, it can save your life, even with out a board.

Cross onshore wind is the only wind, your should kite in, as a beginner.

its all about safe kiting.

Thank you all for reply. I will give a try to Nelsons Bay and Kurnell.

jonnydiesel: I was practicing upwind and downwind bodydrag at Botany bay, still not quite good with upwind bodydrag. I am OK with deep water. I was actually doing the same as you said when losing the board. Get on the shore take the kite upwind and bodydrag to the board. However, few time it was ended up around the rock wall and on shark net. Was hard to recover the board. The space is not really enough at botany bay between rocks and sometime too many kids and people around for safety.

Squirrel: I will give you a call soon

Would 110% disagree with this. Shallow water is much safer for a learner. Why would someone need to "not panic" when they could just stand up/touch the bottom etc, deep water is faaaaarrr more likely to incite a panic attack. I would be mindful of listening to these forums. There are a lot of keyboard warriors here who have no idea how to teach. Just keep at it. Its something that eventually will click. Kurnell would be a great spot, as well as first carpark although its not that shallow. Good luck!

Where exactly do you mean by "squids"? Is that on the channel side or the lake? I have seen it mentioned a few times on this forum but can't pinpoint exactly where they mean. My girlfriend and I are learning at the moment and have been driving up from NW Sydney to Canton and Birdie beaches to practice. Always on the lookout for good learner spots that are low on spectators while we get our kite skills up.

Squids is in Belmont /Swansea area and is for west to north west wind. I wouldn't call it ideal beginner launch area and razor fish something to protech against.

Canton is closer to Sydney with sw, west, NW not too bad for a beginner with water depth pretty good. But can be busy with picnicer's, boats ,sailboards and swimmers this time of year

Squids is just south of Belmont on the eastern side of the lake - it is called squids I suspect because the motel just to the north is called Squids Ink - they launch from the caravan park to the south of the little bay - salts bay is also a good shallow spot on the south side of Swansea channel accessed from Swansea heads(north east wind) - Smiths Lake south of Foster at Sandbar caravanpark(great little park on the lake with plenty of campsites and a few little cabins - nothing flash) is also good shallow spot if the lake is not open to the sea(they dig the channel mouth out now and then I think which lets the built up water out and means dry instead of good shallow spot)
