I was mucking around on the beach the other day when the wind died off and my friend pulled out his skimboard. I had a go just for a laugh thinking it'd be a complete failure but it was surprisingly easy!! I was crankin up wind in really low wind conditions, it was my first time riding strapless and it felt great. I couldn't build up as much speed as I would with my twin tip because without fins the board would slide out from underneath me, but I'm sure it just takes practice.
Anyway, I wanted to see if anyone has some suggestions for a cheap skim board, just something to muck around on when conditions aren't great. My friends board is a Victoria, which seem to go for around $300 online, but on gumtree there are skimboards for $30-$100. I can't really tell but they mostly look like the cheap thin plywood boards, do those work as well? My friend's board was about 25cm thick and quite buoyant which I'm sure helps in the low wind. What characteristics should I be looking for or are they all good enough to get up and going?

Hi Acitta,
I have a slingshot scud skimboard with a 50mm fin and it is really great light wind fun.
I recently bought a victoria skimboard (55 inches XXL) and it is also great fun without a fin. Just a bit longer and fatter for my body size.
Provided you use even pressure on both feet and dig the rail in, you should go up wind really well. The skill and fun is in keeping the edge/balance.
You can easily make one and there are a heap of youtube videos with instruction. Unfortunately they are quite expensive to buy out here.
I have seen a few nice ones on seabreeze buy and sell.
The dude on shop.shinai.co has some nice paulownia blanks that would perfect for whipping one up.
