Hey! I just had my first session in the surf at Wanda yesterday arvo and was out on my 138 TT and '09 Ozone 7m Sport. Wind was about 22kts and a little gusty with 2-3 foot surf and I weigh about 78kgs. Overall I was stoked and went well except for the lack of power.
Everyone else was out also on 7m kites but short lines and surf boards.

I always seem to have trouble getting and keeping power with this kite and there is a huge gap between my 7m and my 11m. I was flying the kite so hard to get power at times while others were just parking and flying along. Possibly I would have been comfortable on my 11m and can usually handle that up to almost 30kts but I went for the safer option since it was the first wave attempt.

I would like to stick with the TT for the moment but possible later I will buy a wave board.

Would changing from 25m to 20m lines help? Should I have been riding the 11m in that windstrength with a TT?

IMO the best thing for you to do would be to get yourself a surfboard. i reckon it will make it easier for you on your 7m. by having more flotation and a larger surface area you will find it feels like you have more power than riding on your twintip.

I was out there too. I was using an 8m Ozone Catalyst with a far bit of trim pulled in. I'm 65 kg and ride a mutant, Shinn wave 148. It was a fairly gusty day but heaps of fun just the same. My bigger kite is 10m.

Keep the long lines, I don't think I saw anyone on short lines. You can definitely ride a smaller kite on a surfboard in the surf.

I think you would benefit from a 9m kite. For your weight 7m on a TT will not be used much.

If the budget doesn't allow a 9m kite think of a bigger board, 148 - 152 range. You can also use it on light days with your 11m. Second hand a good one will set you back about $500.

Shorter lines reduce your bottom end not increase it ...... the differnce is that th others were using surfboards not TT's

Shorter Lines = less power

It is likely you were chasing the kite at times too and thus losing power.

Riding in waves you tend to align yourself with the waves more than holding the best line to keep power.

So still a bit of a learning curve in that regard. Keep at it.

Thanks folks. Yeah definitely a lot of work to do on my technique. Will put away some coin for a bigger TT or wave board. I think I've seen you on that Shinn mutant in the bay KIT33R ripping some sick carves. Might check out something like that.
In the mean time I'm not pulling out the 7m until its really cranking.
Thanks heaps.

You're very welcome to try the Shinn anytime. I know KP has one in stock if you like it.
