Hi guy,

I am thinking about using a softboard such as the ones from REBEL sport to use this as a lightwind board. Since I am not used to ride strapless I would attach some footstraps to it (mabey from windsurfing). I just wonder if that is possible or not. People riding all sorts of stuff including fridge doors and inflatable thongs. Maybe it will only work in flat water? It would be a convenient light-weight solution to transport.

Great idea, I might get one too.

Don't bother with the straps though. Not worth it and you don't need them especially in light wind.

Hi Tobias

Did you take a boogie board out with a kite before?

Would you use a leash on a foam surfboard?

For this price you could pickup a old kite surfboard 6+ years. Which would be better?

I'm not so sure. OP is looking for a light wind option and there weren't many around 6 years ago.

Alternative options would be an old fish surfboard from gumtree or something kite specific which will cost more:

Nope not yet. Some boogie boards are a bit less stiff than softboards. But if you have one laying around give it a try. It is not recommended to use a board leash in kiteboarding but if you desperately need one, get a roll-on leash and a helmet (at least). The fundamental idea was to surf without a leash, and in case of loosing the board, just don't bother an buy a new one :)

Cheers

Not to be a p**** but I reckon you would crease that board in under a month and render it useless.

Not to mention it riding like a bus. May as well start the kite sup convos again...

Not trying to be super nego, but I'd rather ride a skim. Not worth wasting your $100+ hard earned. By all means have a whirl if you rock up to beach and one is handy though!

Hi DJMWA,

I assume so. Also jumps are not possible, it will literally break into two pieces. But if I will find one on a council clean up I will do it!
Mazdon there are different sizes available, wouldn't go with the biggest one. Thanks for the links bene!

Yeah but the rail thickness, bottom contour and general thickness will still be issues.

Bah, if curious go for it and get out there... And then post a review! Yeww

Hi

Word of caution with the softboard....We used an almost identical one to that to take some 10 year olds wakeboarding at pretty low speed. Ripped and broke all the fins out of the board within an hour. Cannot be fixed properly as it pulled the plugs through the board leaving big holes where the plugs were!

Hi Noahsky,

Maybe true for wakeboarding but what should ripp off fins in plain water, apart from sharks?

Cheers

if you're carving, the lateral or perpendicular forces on the fin are enough to "fold" its base out of the foam of the bottom of the board, depending on how it is fixed in.

my mate snaps cheap fcs fins at their tabs quite frequently from doing high speed snaps/carves on a heavier surf board in high winds (powered riding), what noahs saying would be similar.

if you are just going to lazy it around, might not be an issue anyways.

sorry to restart an old thread but how did you go with the softboard idea? I thought it was a great idea when i came across these softboards by tom carroll

http://www.softechsoftboards.com/58-jl-dss-signature-softboard-9

He has a fcs box in them so you can chuck some decent fins in. With the standard fins it looks like a fun shape to kite with is a 5'8 and wouldnt have to worry to much about using a leggy especially starting out in waves where you seem to be recovering your board just as much as kiting.

Bit exy but might go alright?

$460 plus a set of decent fins is a hell of a lot to pay, you could definitely get a reasonable 2nd hand board purpose built for kiting for that...

lol there is another 5'8 that is 3hundred something but you get a board you can surf (maybe anyone ridden any of the 'performance' softtops?) and can kite with a leggy,

kite specific board cant surf unless you are 30kg and shouldn't use leash

surfboard can surf but dont always hold up well kiting and shouldnt use a leash
