A 'kite surfer' offered me some friendly advice on my style today. I put kite surfer in quotes because he had no kite or board with him and really how would I know?

His advice was that I need to turn the bar from horizontal to vertical as I plunge the kite for my water start. He offered a reasonable sounding explanation of why I need to do this and how it will fix my problems.

I am fairly sure this is in complete contradiction to what my instructor said during my first lesson?

I think there were three things I did seriously wrong that stopped me getting any significant board time today:
1. going out when there isn't any wind
2. going out with a too small kite
3. going out with a too small board

Anyway, what do you think of using the bar like a steering wheel?

Turning the bar vertically doesn't do much difference for kites turning ability or for generating power.
But having a think about it... It does make your trailing shoulder lift a wee bit more, which might result in you moving a wee bit more forward over the board, and that makes it easier to start by getting over on top of the board quicker/easier...
Or maybe not.

Still, kites turn due to different line length (change in the shape of the kite, to be precise, makes the kite turn) - well not really the absolute length of the lines but relative to you/chicken loop. Anyway, you know what I mean. But turn the bar vertically if it makes it easier for you.

Whatever feels right is right.

Also, your avatar is already used by gestalt, might get confusing.

Unless you really want to fight it, the bar will "line up" with the kite naturally...

Number 1 is the most common mistake I made too... Just be careful

Thanks Dave, I've had that Avitar for a while and not noticed that I had ripped off Gestalt. Looks like he plays mostly in Heavy weather.

Anyway, do you recognise this one?

Nope. Get a steering wheel if you want to do that.

Sir Robert Muldoon prime minister of New Zealand 1975 until 1984. This guy called a snap election while pissed and ended up thrown out of power.

Hows that: drunk in charge of a small country!

He is also known for saying that “New Zealanders who emigrate to Australia raise the IQ of both countries.”

A bit rough since I emigrated.

By all accounts a little prick of a man!

Keep bar parallel or flatter than the leading edge and if LE goes past vertical, don't follow it, stay flatter than vertical. Keeping your shoulder's back will help avoid the "steering wheel" comedy that most of us love to watch.

Did you consider the possibility he was taking the piss with a pokerface?
