Hi gurus,

I've clocked few hours on my 3-lines trainer, in Perth, and I need some help to understand what expectations I should have when it comes to the constant pull.

So far it seems the only thing that works ok is the laying down eight ∞ with the kite going up in the middle of the wind window and going down on the edges.

I have the following problems though:
* in winds that can actually drag me on the beach the kite goes quite fast so and it takes strength and quite a lot of movement of the bar to keep doing the loops;
* I'm struggling to keep the loops consistent - it's easy for the kite to 'run away' a bit to far to the edge and it loose most of the power

I've read that doing vertical 8 on just one side of the wind window is great for getting constant pull, but at the moment I cannot imagine doing these tight 8s. I'm still perfecting 8s in the middle of the window so trying to do them in just one side seems difficult. I know practice makes perfect, but I still think it would be quite a skill to keep doing 8s on just one side of the wind window in a wind strong enough to drag you.

What should be my expectations, realistically?

Hey Tymski
We have a purpose written 'trainer kite manual' we give to all our students - along with free use of a trainer - before they begin their lessons.
Give me a call & I'll shoot you a copy.
Makes answering all your questions a cinch if you follow the program.

I had a 3.5 hydra for two years before i had lessons. That's a fair sized kite as a trainer and would pull like a mule.

Things i learned on that was more where the limits of the wind window was on each side and where the power zone started and finished inside the window.
If i had gone the full figure 8 stroke on mine i would have ended up flat on my face ( did a couple of times). One invaluable lesson it does teach you is that when you get in trouble you let go before it dumps you.

When you get lessons you will no doubt be given a trainer to see what you know about kite control. I spent about 2 minutes on one , the instructor just said it was obvious i knew what was what.
Never prepares you for the power of full sized one though only that you know where the different zones are.

You are spot on Peter. A true trainer kite is either a small real LEI kite or a "trainer" with a bar and chicken loop setup like the Hydra and Ozone Octanes. You really need to feel the power of the kite from the harness, not from your arms because for beginners kiting is done with the kite hooked into the harness anyway.

I tried a NASA Wing 3mtr kite once with a bar only and poah! The power of single skin kites was incredible and gave my arms a work out, and I do weights, weigh 80k and consider myself pretty fit, and even I struggled to hold her in under 10 knots. So I cannot imagine a smaller person or a lady being able to sustain trainer kites without a chicken loop for too long.
