I want to get involved in kite surfing and have seen a lot of people recommending buying a training kite before doing kiteboarding lessons. Does anyone else have any opinions on this?

Once I get the training kite, can anyone recommend anywhere in Sydney to go practice? Should I be looking for a beach or a park or what? Any info I can get would be greatly appreciated.

If anyone else is looking to do the same thing and wants someone to learn with let me know too!

Cheers

yep, the trainer kite is a great way to get a taste of the sport without too much danger. It'll accelerate your training a bit once you start your lessons, but the transferability from the trainer kite to larger inflatable kites is limited. The majority of students start their lessons without trainer kite experience and it's no big deal really...

Yes a trainer kite is good however If I did things again I probably would have got a 3m 4 string kite ( preferably an inflatable)

This way you get the proper control bar and you are hooked in as though it was a larger kite, you get to feel the intense pull of the wind and get to gain respect for the power of the wind and what can go wrong if you are in the wrong part of the wind window when you shouldnt be.

It may cost a bit more for the set up but I am sure it will pay dividends when it comes time for you to take the next step.

Go second hand if possible because you still might trash it especially if you are not on sand.

a three metre inflatable is a waste of money

a three metre trainer kite is fun and more functional

or even go an ozone 4.5 or 5 mtr power foil kite
check out www.kitepower.com

the bigger foil kite will give you more options after you master the basics of flying, such as if you wanna give buggying or all terrain boarding a go.

Reason I said inflatable is
You can practice your self launches and landings also when you do stack you probably won't need help to relaunch. The foil kites are good but once you hit the deck it's rare that they will easily relaunch for you with out assistance

Go the HQ Hydra Trainer Kite, 3 line water and land relaunchable.......at 3m in 20knots it will give you a lot of fun, and some perspective on how powerful big kites can be. Can be used in the water for a bit of downwind body dragging.....the kids and I have a great time with it.
