Total newbie question.
But can I use a wake board to kite?

The board is 138cm.
Moderate rocker.
Although has boots instead of straps.
Which I gather can be replaced.
Has smaller fins than typical kite board.
Don't have width dimensions.

I'm 168cm (5'6) & 56kgs.
While I'm new to kiting.
I have +20 years experience in snowboarding, skating & surfing
So I assume, once my kite skills have refined, being lighter I could deal could this wake board.

Is this correct.
Can my presumptions be corrected.
Any advice appreciated.

Cheers

Simple answer yes with question mark
The rocker in a wake board is so big it is almost impossible to get it to rail ie get the whole edge of the board to dig in and stop you from going down wind and go side ways to the kite . you normaly ride the wake board say flat on top of the water where a kite board is more ridden on a angle, heels into the water and toes out on the edge the only time board is flat is for doing slid turns or directly down wind .
With all that the wake dose create a lot of drag hence a lot of power so bigger kite bigger wind and after half hour you are so stuffed because of it .
Go buy a cheep second hand board the right horse for the job easer to ride and a lot more fun over all .

I'd have to concur with s2a!

Tried a wakeboard the other day which had a lot more rocker than my board and no fins (surprisingly it gripped as much as my kite board). While I was underpowered it was a horrible experience, couldn't stay up wind because every time I would try to edge hard I would slow to a stop. Had no problem going upwind when I was powered up but it took more effort.

Personally ill probably never use it to kite again, kite board works much better! I'd say try it with some straps and if you get frustrated get a kiteboard.

The board was fun jumping off small swell, i'd imagine it would be fun in the waves?

Slightly off-topic, but why are wake boards so much cheaper than kite boards? I was in a shop the other day checking them out, most were in the $280 - $400 range, yet the material and workmanship appeared to be much the same.. Big difference to $700 - $1100!

Having a look online the well known brand board+boots will set you back well over a grand, although it looks like there is a few cheaper options out there!

wakeboarding is a much more mainstream sports than kiting so the manufacturing volume and budget range is not quite there yet

Also weight is not an issue. Kiteboard's are more of a balancing act between construction, weight and flex.

I was asking the same question when I first started. I already had a wakeboard and thought it would do the job. I struggled with it for many frustrating sessions not really getting anywhere with it. Once I decided to switch to a kiteboard everything just fell into place and my progress took off.
