Hi people,
I'm wanting to learn and would love a little advice here please,
1) What the best way to learn, just pay for some instruction lessons? If so any recommendations?
2) Is December 2020 in Melbourne a bad time to learn with the threat of lockdown again?
3) I'm 110kgs and 6" tall, about 15kgs heavier than I should be, hoping to get fit with the help of kitesurfing... anything I should be aware of here? Just bigger equipment?

Thanks in advance

Find yourself a second hand trainer kite, don't spend much on it and then learn to fly it well.
Then lessons, St Kilda, Rosie or Inverloch. It's all about kite flying.

If you can, get your lessons in Rosebud. Or fly to Perth for a few weeks.

Hi people,

I'll be the first to welcome you to the sport! WELCOME

Kite surfing in 3 easy stages:
1. Fly a small 2 or preferably 4 line trainer kite. Watch videos to get motivated. Repeat over several weekends
2. After controlling trainer kite across all areas of the wind-window, book lessons. You'll need at least 3 or 4
3. Buy 2nd hand gear and Practice, practice, practice

Later (after 2 seasons):
Sell all gear and upgrade to modern gear. You are now an Intermediate kiter. Congratulations!

Later again (over 3 years):
Advance to jumps, loops, tricks

ps: Don't become a foiler. That's for elite knobs that think they rule the beach and the sport. Stick to twin-tips or a directional / surfboard - TRUE kiting

or.... add a foil board to the quiver and double your opportunity and time on the water... ??

Go and talk to the guys at Kite Republic, they run lessons in St Kilda every windy day.
Buy new gear if you can afford it, or take the advice of your instructor regarding suitable used gear.
At your height and weight get a 14M kite if you can only afford one, and if 2 is in the budget get a 14/11 or 10m combo.
Choose a larger board at least 144-150cm long and 44-48cm wide. (does not need to be new)
Try on harnesses and definitely look into the shorts or seat type of harness - but an instructor will advise on the best style for you.
There is never a bad time to learn, although waiting till the end of summer is not advisable because it will be difficult to get good conditions to get out and practice regularly, and practice is the key to success, the more the better.
