Hi All,

New to the sport. Looking to pick up some second hand gear and I have an idea of what type of thing I'm looking for in terms of models/sizes but not really sure what is a fair price to offer. There appears to be a lot of variation in asking price among kites of similar model and age.

Is there a basic rule of thumb on the depreciation rate on kiting gear in reasonable order?

Thanks

I would say there is no basic rule. It very much depends on condition, some kites are left in the sun and blowing in the wind on the beach for hours which reduces their life, others packed away with lots of sand and damp.

Assume a $2000 kite
Ex demo 30% $1400
1 year old 50% $1000
2 years another 25% $750
3 Years another 25% $562.5
4 years +... Good luck

Most take the purchase price into account, in the early days kites held more value, today there's shidt loads of gear cheap as chips, some of the sellers on sea breeze buy n sell are dreaming ,

That's $500 per piece. It fits in the 4 years plus good luck category. it appears you were lucky.

Simple really - look in the buy and sell and put in the year of your kite and the size and hit search - in your face then are the top and bottom end prices of the kites from all brands - look at the descriptions of condition and price yours accordingly!

North has always been an annomoly in my opinion. People pay big bucks for them. Sold a girl a 2009 rebel 3 years ago for 200.00. she rode it for a year and sold it for 550.00
Some people pay!

Buy and Sell can be a real "Fools Paradise".

There is some proper ****e in there. I would suggest finding someone who has been in the sport for more than a year and asking them to help you sift through the rubbish to find a gem. Most people in the sport for only 1 year will likely know stuff all about, but extolling the virtues of the best (and only) kite they have ever flown.

As a general rule, You get what you pay for. If it's cheap, it's probably crap. Why would you sell a kite worth $1200 for $400 unless it has problems? There are some exceptions, but you need to know what you are looking at to tell the difference. Fair dinkum buyers may even let you take the kite to a local shop for evaluation.

I've seen many people faff around dealing with stretched lines, leaking bladders, peeling valves and stretched canopies that don't fly right for a whole season only to eventually buy a quality late model used or new kite and wonder why they persisted with the old crap for so long.

Quality means reliability and performance as intended. Cheap means someone else finally got sick of pouring money into an old kite which let them down one too many times.

Find someone knowledgable and ask for help. Most decent shops will also help you sift through the crap on SB if they are quiet.
