Couple of questions iggy.......

Was it a traditional surfboard that u demoed or specific kite surfboard?
If traditional do u plan to ride it in the surf without the kite as well?

Rule of thumb for traditional surfboard is for the board to be 2 inches taller than what u are and I would think with a kite surfboard u could afford to go a little bit shorter as most seem to have a bit more volume than traditional. So keep demoing and I would try some of the larger ones considering ur weight and height.
Most of my mates and myself bought a cheap old dinged up sb to start with and practice on........just a suggestion

Ohh, and keep persisting with the strapless riding and practicing ur gybes, it'll be well worth it when u get it dialled

.....I would also recommend getting urself a copy of the Ben Wilson dvd Smack

Good Luck!

Although I'm pretty tall (6'7") I don't worry about length so much as fins, rocker, volume and construction. I like a quad for winds over 20 knots on board with a bit of rocker and lighter volume (24 litres) @ 6'1" so you can control the speed a bit more. Light wind (14-20) I prefer a thruster with bugger all rocker and plenty of volume (26 litres) @ 5'9". Both are EPS core which stands up to the abuse fairly well.

Having said all that I don't surf them so it only has to cover one base. Personally I think you are more likely to sink a board with straps on it as you are more likely to have your backfoot in the backstrap when you're going slow, rather than up forward to help get/stay on the plane.
