Hi Noobs,

Just a heads up. I know many of you are amping to get out amongst it and the wind does look good, however, I would encourage you all to approach VERY cautiously if you are going out today. Have a look at the graph below and note that gusts are 50% stronger than average wind speed. In 20 knots, this means you will have lulls down around 10 knots and gusts to 30 knots.

Bearing in mind MOST kites have a safe useable wind range of about 15 knots, this will mean you fall above and below the maximum and minimum wind speeds for your kite. This means you will find you will be unable to stay upwind in the lulls and will be dangerously overpowered in the gusts.

Make sure you know what you are doing, make sure you get an assisted launch and preferably a land too, by someone who knows what they are doing. You are better to be a little under powered than very overpowered so if you are only just hanging on to the kite in the average winds, your kite is TOO BIG.

Some of the information posted about wind strengths and trimming your kite recently will land you in a lot of trouble on a day like today, so I urge you to consider carefully your decision to ride and play on the side of caution. One bad decision leading to an accident could effect the rest of your life!

Days like today aren't the ones to go out and learn kiteboarding.

That is all!

DM

Thanks for the info.

So, is Swanbourne the weather station to watch for us Perth guys?

Right now I use Ocean Reef which seems to most closely match the windspeed/gust I experience when I actually hit the shore.

I'm pretty new to it, so I could be wrong...

Hi Joea,

No, not necessarily. Best idea is to look at Ocean Reef, then add that to Swanbourne and divide by two (average the two weather stations).

Ocean Reef always reads a bit high and Swanny always reads a bit low. Wind at Pinnaroo is almost exactly the average of the two.

I just used Swanny as an example because is best described my point of the original post.

Cheers mate,
