Im a very beginner to the sport and a bit confused about which kind of wetsuit to buy for a Melbourne weather, as on surf u spend lots of time in the water , in kite surf we don't...im in between a e bomb from ripcurl, a infinity from xcel or a patagonia which seems really well build should i go for a 4/3 or 3/2...kind

Winter - 4/3 full length and booties, with hood and gloves for those really f'n cold days.
Summer 3/2 shorty... or just boardies & rashie.

I've had good use out of my O'Neill Psycho 4/3. It's lasted me about 3 seasons and i wear it every single time i go out. Even in the middle of summer i use it and just flush some cool water down my back if i get a bit warm.

you know if you didn't wear your panties outside your wetsuit you wouldn't get so warm

Sealed seam 3/2 is adequate for Melbourne all year round. Probably a bit warm for summer.

A 4/3 is warmer but they can take ages to dry.

I have used Rip Curl suits for years and they are excellent. I used to buy them at 40% off end of season sales. Last time I bought a suit they only had 20% off so the Rip Curl were still a little expensive.

I'm now using a Radiator 3/2 www.radiator.net and it has been really good. I only used the 4/3 once this winter. The Radiator dries very quickly.

For winter riding if you want to stay warm you *must* wear long booties with the wetsuit leg tucked down into the booties and the velcro done up tight. No wetsuit will keep you warm with cold water shooting up your leg. You can use tape or webbing straps on the legs but it's not as effective as booties. A hood is also good on those really cold days.

Number of boardies with ass ripped out on shells - 3 pairs in 3 seasons
Number of wetsuits worn in the last 3 seasons - one.
I'd much rather sacrifice a $50 pair of boardies than a $300-400 wetsuit.

As for the brand... i personally hate the Rip Curl batwing thing that you've gotta get over your head to get the wetsuit on, so i went with the O'Neill. Trying on wetsuits is an exhausting experience, but if you make a day trip down to Torquay then you'll have heaps to try on and you'll end up with a decent wetsuit for cheap.

Why are you dragging your arse on shells? Nobody else does.

i picked up a 4/3 ripcurl wettie for the seconds shop for $115 about 6 weeks ago, not sure if they will have any left at that price though. A sealed 3/2 will easly do you all year round if you get some 5mm booties and wear a vest with a hood on the really nippy days

Buy the best fully sealed 3/2 you can afford and a good thermal rashie.

That combo will be warmer than your average 4/3

+1 for the thermal rashie. You can wear it by itself with boardies in summer.

BTW. Rip Curl suits have a lifetime warranty on seams and 12 months on everything else. I have had a few warranty claims and in one case they replaced the whole top half of the suit, upgrading it in the process. A mate had a 15 year old suit completely refurbished for free. You just drop your suit off at a Rip Curl dealer and they cover the shipping and stuff.

I used to do my own repairs but Rip Curl repairs are excellent quality and quite reasonably priced for the ones you have to pay for.

The new Rip Curl suits have a chest zip which I am told is excellent.

The Radiator suits are pretty basic in in the zip and closure area. No tricky seals or anything. They are prone to flushing so they're not so good for cold water surfing with a lot of duck diving.
