Im just starting out in kiteboarding but i'm 16 and don't have much of an income at the moment and am wondering which size can cover the largest wind range and what kite is the best for a beginner without have to change to a better kite when i become advanced. I've been thinking slingshot octane but pretty pricey new and there aren't many around second hand

there is a few things to consider, firstly whats your weight, where abouts will you be sailing and what size/style of board? (eg twin tip or surfboard)

You neec to talk to the locals where you will be doing most of your kiting.
Find out what is the most common wind strength they get.
It is no good having someone tell you a 7 metre has the biggest range if your winds are mostly light.
Most of the new kites now have good wind range (from about 2007 on) and being able to make use of that range will come with experience.

You will get lots of posters on here that will simply tell you the kite they use is best.

Take some lessons and talk to the locals.

I have only been kiting for twelve or so months and have just bought a new kite because i didnt look into it enough when setting up with my first kite. This time i tried as many brands i could until i found the right one for me and found myself with an Octane. Thats not to say there the best kite to get i just find it the best for me. So get your hands on as many demos as you can.
