Hi all,

Just got myself a Cabrinha Convert IDS 12m this weekend so will get out when the wind turns somewhere near southerly for me as I've only had lessons.

I will be going to Altona most of the time. Easy question for someone which beacon reading do I use from SeaBreeze to determine the direction and strength of the wind.

Thanks
Glenn

St Kilda / Fawkner Beacon.
If you've only just had lessons may i recommend sticking to the beach that you had the lessons at for familiarities sake. Going to a new beach, with new gear, as an inexperienced rider is going to cause headaches.

BTW, watch out... the tree's and powerlines at Altona are magnetic to Cabrinha's!

Hi Glenn, please read the recent threads regarding Altona in the vic and general forums. Altona is getting busy and tempers are heating up.

Be sure you understand right-of-way, launching and landing procedure and signals, and that you know and have practised your safety options for if things go wrong.

With only the 12m there will be windy days when you're best off sitting on the beach and watching.

If in doubt, ask someone who knows. If still in doubt, then more lessons, that is if you can find an instructor who knows and can teach these things.

All,

Thanks for the feedback.. I've had plenty of lessons and practiced all the safety stuff (as much as I can in the lesson timeframe). I'm going to get another lesson with an instructor using my kite but at sometime need to head out and learn myself.

Yep read all the Altona threads and will be as 'co-operate' as much as I can - hopefully will be enough helpful people down there and I can stay out of the way. I'll only be going down when there's perfect conditions to learn with.

Thanks all
Glenn

Just out of curiousity... what do you think the perfect conditions to learn with are for Altona?

I refer back to my previous point - if your new to this then your far better off sticking with familiar conditions and surroundings (the beach that you learnt at) until you've progressed to a point where you are a safe and competent kiter.
Again, this isn't a "don't kite Altona/Brighton/St Kilda/etc etc", this is just that every beach has it's nuances with water, sandbars, wind turbulence/dead zones.
