3 repairs in a row this week needing replacement inflate valves - unnecessarily.
My Advice
When you pull your deflate pull your inflate at the same time.
Leaving the inflate cap inserted till you need to pump it next - esp in hot cars etc. - will stretch the inlet stem till it finally doesnt have a tight fit that holds.

Depending on the brand you can sometimes stretch the cap to make it hold but why bother when you have to take the cap out before pumping next time anyhow.

Better still, don't buy kites that rely on wedging, friction and Velcro to hold the inflation system together. Screw in caps work much more reliably and effectively.

I have contemplated this issue for years....

My concern with leaving the valve open is that it allows sand into to bladder which has the potential to sit in the creases and make little holes...saying that, I have never experienced that so the concern may be invalid.

I also don't want to stretch inlet stems...

I leave the screw cap closed all the time and inflate and deflate through the inflate valve.
That way it's always open when you pack up . Never had any valve issues over the years with this method .

This is something we teach in our kite lessons under looking after equipment, most riders seem to be to lazy by the end of a session to relieve the plug!

Just unplug it and you will have one less part to worry about in the long run!

Thanks Alliance. Nice to be vindicated instead of flamed for a change

@ NickT
I assume you mean the female stem in the boiling water. I wouldnt know cos Ive never tried ? But I will now.
Best fix I know of to avoid a stick on replacement is only for those kites that dont have a solid male cap.
Put the cap in boiling water. Then insert your pump nozzle inside the cap to stretch it wider.
(you may have to trim your pump nozzle end to get the right dia.)
Wait for it to cool or put it in cold water.
Cap will then hold in the stretched valve stem.
Works OK - but not so good as a long term result.

If you have a solid core cap you can try swapping it for a hollow centre one.
Most shops would have them laying around the tool shed as freeby handout.

Hey,

Nickt is right, by simply heating up the inlet valve stem and allowing the stem to cool naturally and slowly, will restore it's origninal size and prevent leaks, but yes, it's a good idea to pull the inlet valve plug at the same time as the deflate.
