+1

Second hand is a great idea for your first kite as it's going to get a hard life.

Yes there are many good used kites for learning and beyond, some good ones would be any Cabrinha Switchblade or Crossbow from 2008 onwards, Ozone Catalyst, Core Gt or XR, Slingshot T2 or 3, Best waroo from 2008 onwards, etc, etc.

You DO WANT good relaunching and good depower and safety system! All kites jump, so don't even worry about that.

yep thats right. dont get fooled by the price of a cheap kite. anything from 2009 onwards should be your target... just make sure you get taught how to use the kite you buy because it will probably be a lot different to the one you first had lessons on.

I bought the same kite that I learnt on with the instructor. Slingshot RPM. It has been great. Had it for a year now and love it.

Agree completely - a great kite.
But for learning ???? ...... maybe not the sharpest learning curve option out there.
But as to the first question
"are ben wilson kites good for beginners???"
The Noise is a fast and responsive kite - no doubt about that.
Its not a sluggish pussy-easy school kite but if your school/instructor offers great instruction on preliminaries (like a solid trainer kite or short line program) then no reason not to slip into learning onto a slightly advanced kite like the Noise.
Esp true if you are heading towards a true kite "surfing" future. Why not learn on the kite you are going to want to be flying.

Fair enough. I didn't know anything about kites. Started skating & surfing young and have done some snowboarding. So the board skills were there. Doesn't take a genius to learn how to fly a kite. But at the time (and still now) I trusted my instructor and enjoyed the lessons I had on the RPM so I just got one.

I was familiar with the rigging & safety after a few lessons and was riding upwind so thought it was a safe buy (not knowing anything at the time).

Still happy with it and have added another RPM to the quiver recently.

All good DrPOOb
My suggestion that the RPM may not be the easiest or best kite to learn on was just for others wanting info on whats "best" for learning. There are easier kites to fly that will get your kite skills up there quicker. (not much in it really these days as long as ppl stay away from straight 'C' kites)
Having learnt on an RPM isnt really a problem - esp now that ur rocking and loving ur kite. They are an awesome choice for lots of people.
