im always 1st up to help launch and land kites, but im finding a lot of beginners/ early intermediates are holding their boards , simply put most havnt the kite control to do this with both hands never mind one, so when coming in carry your board downwind and place on the beach prior to asking for a land, I also witness a lot of guys placing their board on the beach in line with their lines when launching, place your board behind you so you don't create a tangle hazard, another tip if you do carry your board carry it downwind of yourself, too many times im seeing people struggling with a board forced against themselves due to windstrength, added to that they carnt control the kite, keep yourself and those assisting safe

Yeah NickT has special launching needs. You need to move the kite in the right spot for him

Why downwind? I'm usually placing my board upwind ~5m so that I'm never going to get the lines tangled with it even if the landing fails & kite heads downwind. Is downwind safer?

Downwind on the OPPOSITE side of yourself from the kite is the regular practice, around 5 metres down and 5 or so away, so once launched you will generally walk straight across to it, so maybe 3 metres downwind say.

Say there abouts

Depends on position your assisted lander, if tether land or self then yes your board needs to be away from path of lines, you shouldn't be having a failed landing with assisted or tethered, I see a few failed assisted launches in a season, always due to poor rider knowledge of wind direction, it's not the responsibility of the launcher to position himself, and when assisting landing the kite should be only approached when either sat on the beach or close, I won't approach an overhead hovering kite, IMO your asking for trouble
