Don't be put off by it. If you study the DVD, get proper lessons from a qualified instructor, apply common sense, it's not that bad.
You'll be fine.

Hey, don't be put off by seeing ppl do complex moves as a newbie you will only going the very basics so you should be good to go as long as you have had some lessons. I used to you tube my ass off for the things of interest, different tutos offer a different angle as there are usually more than one way to do the same thing but basically they are all the same so start tubing

I've started watching the Progression vids as review to lessons I've already had. It'd be nice to go out in light winfs. Kitesurfing Hawaii uses BRM kites for ultra light wind lessons around 10-12 knots. Any thoughts on a tactic like that?

Light wind kiting, although safe, is highly technical and not easy. It can be very frustrating for a newbee. Best have at least 15 knots.

Even if the winds are a bit light to get you on the water there's nothing stopping you simply flying your kite,
IMHO the better your kite skill the better kiter you'll become 80% of this sport is kite flying ability,
Walking the beach with the kite parked low translates to the water, even just rigging up and getting to know your equipment is time well spent

Download the progression app and videos on your phone. That way you can watch them right before you go out or come in for a break to watch the common problems section. They are very good.
