Hey everyone I was hoping someone could help me find a kite that can be used on both the land and water. I know that a cheap hybrid probably doesn't exist but I don't want it end up costing more than two kites because that would just be pointless. The biggest problem I have is that the winds in the area are usually 16 mph max (sorry for the stupid american measurement). I am brand new and have just bought a trainer to get used to things. The only hybrid I have heard of is the hq hydra, would that just be my best bet? Thanks for the help sorry for being a bit confusing.

Seriously though, what are you planning to do? Closed-cell foil if you must have a foil, or an inflatable kite will do fine...

Kamizuka is correct. Any kite that can be used on the water can be used on land.

That means you can looks at Lei, closed cell foil.

I kitesurf, landboard, kitebuggy and use leis, and closes cell foil.

horses for courses,
beginners need inflatables for water, foils for land
only more experienced can use foils for water, or inflatables on land,
pump ups fit both bills only if you are serious about water,
used to ride buggies, mountainboards, and big water directionals on foils,
now rip on one size inflatable kite in all disciplines,
any easy late model lei kite, stable and depowerable may suit you

Well, my kitebuddy is 100% time on water with his flysurfer speed 3 (15m) but he spent alot time on the "ground" since he recently started kitesurfing and we have crappy winds here. He can go at 8-9 knots with 138-42 board (i think) and keep it in the air from i would say 5-6 knots. He is about 70 kg.

Sounds okay for your windrange (?)

Also he said it is way easier (for him) than LEI and has great windrange.

Also, safety is good, he went in 15-16 kts gusting to 25.... But he is maniac.

Most LEIs are pretty good for land boarding. I actually prefer LEIs in my local conditions as they tend not to get bow tied during the lulls (I'm comparing four line foils rather than the closed cell foils here)

I personally think it helps if the kite can be reverse launched. I have a Naish Ride that works pretty well because (cheap, reverse launches easily, light weight so stays in the air during lulls pretty well). I'm sure other kites are equally good or better but I tend to see a lot of ex demo and end of season Rides at the same price as 3 year old second hand kites round here.

haha, mad man

buy LEI suited to your local conditions, 12-15m i would say. try to demo some foil kite, they fly bit different that lei's. some people like that, some not.
some foils are easy and beginner friendly, like speed 3, some can bite you.

check this

i think this can't be done with lei

The "down side" of foils for land kiting is that they can twist and collapse when a sudden lull comes and then when the gust comes back it doesn't suddenly pull you like a truck because the foil has to re-inflate the wing tips and this gives you grace to control the kite, ditch it, etc. But with LEI kites, they hold their shape and could collapse upside down in a lull, but if a gust comes back they could quickly pull you like a truck and put you in dangerous territory. When land kiting on the beach, it's safer as the wind like normal kite surfing is more stable and consistent. Land kiting on a salt flat way in land with no hills or trees nearby is also the best. It really depends on where you plan to land kite. Stay safe!
