Hi everyone.

Ive started kite boarding a few years ago and I have 2012 models if naish park and core riot. I haven't been active in the last couple of years and wonder if those kites from a few years ago are still in date, in terms of safety systems?
The kites are in good nick, so theres no issue with wear and tear.

Thanks in advance..

Hi Rockykite,

There have been no significant improvements in safety in the kiteboarding industry in some time. The benchmark is still the North Ironheart quick release system (which hasn't changed significantly in the last 2-3 years) and the myriad of copies and versions from other manufacturers.

Only changes have been that some manufacturers are now converting virtual fifth line kites to single flagging instead of dual front line flagging. This is a relatively minor improvement and is not a "must have" in order to be up with the latest safety stuff. When you buy your next kites they will likely have the improved system, and you may or may not notice any real benefit, but until then.... as Lostdog says, "Get into it".

Don't get too taken with latest greatest, IMO kites can go backwards now and then, the rebel in 2013, cab switchblade in 2013, airush vx in 2014, all these compared with previous years weren't as good,

Anything past 2008-2009 is up to date with modern safety systems regardless of the brand as DM said. Just make sure that the quick release is operating smoothly and get used to releasing it. Activate the safety system the first time you get back out there and get familiar with the behavior of the kite after release. It's a good opportunity to practice self recovering your kite and self-rescue.

Safety systems are only as safe as the kiter's ability to activate them quickly and recover the kite safely, which requires training and practice.
