Hi people , I have been kiting for about 7 months now and have been suffering from foot cramps (under arch of foot)alot whilst riding , which I have just been ignoring , to my detriment ,I now have a very painful mid upper foot pain which doc thinks may be a stress fracture (awaiting x ray results as we speak) my question is . are there any products on the market to enhance support in the bindings or are there any super supportive bindings (just the sandal type)not boots
and has any one had this injury and have any advice or experience they care to share .
think ill be out of the water for a bit but want to get back out there asap and dont want to go down this road again
I'm currently using cabrinah bindings if that helps , obviously I should have adresssed this before it hurt but was having to much fun to worry about it
I guess this may also be a warning for any one else out there who feels discomfort in arch after 10 minutes of riding
cheers

Can't give u any advice on the injury u have because I have never experienced this type of injury but, as far as the foot straps and pads go, I have North Entities on my Underground board and they are super comfy with plenty of support for the arch of ur foot, loads of different adjustments for the width of ur foot and soft, medium or hard insert pads for ur heel. My feet have never been happier

I have also heard good reports about the Naish Apex's but have no personal experience with them as I have no need try anything else due to complete satisfaction with the NTT's

Price wise, I think they are around $150 - $200

I always found simple booties or even old runners great! Where I kite there is tonnes of rock, sharp shells, twigs and thorns on the grass. Nothing worse than damaging your own feet for the sake of "freedom".

Go visit a chiro and get him to show you how to strap it to give you the support you need. Mine was $30 then found out it was covered by my health fund so ended up handing over $12. Was 2 seasons ago but all good now.
You could try changing your stance on the board too if that's an option.
I have the Naish Apex on the way so will get good to try them.

Thanks for posting, I was going to post a similar question. I have super flat feet and get pretty sore after a session. I wanna try pads with some better arch support, I ride a Shinn Dundee but the pads are basically flat.

Old runners - were you on a TT or a SB?! You'd need pretty loose straps... how did you make it work?

Looks like it's not a fracture , sweet , it has improved a lot after some anti inflams and rest , I even went for a kite yesterday to feel how it was , it was no worries , I tried tightening my straps to the point where you've got to push a bit to get your foot in and no pain and no cramps had a much better time out there riding this way and will continue from here with tighter straps as it gave me heaps more control of the board and more support for foot , thanks for replies will def learn how to strap foot ,cheers

Just loosen your straps to the max. Mine are cardboards.

Might help to do some warm up stretches before you kite too.

The standard Airush pads have a a good chunk of arch support, don't much like the straps but.

hey iggypop - its been a while sinc ethe thread started so i hope its all fixed!

however i would add a couple of things

cramping of the feet can be caused by a number of things but the most common in this instance (unless you have some sort of circulatory problem or heavy smoker etc etc) would be electrolyte imbalance.

its a common one surfers experience and you can find yourself in big big trouble attempting to swim with a foot cramping

funny enough i have treated this plenty of times with almost 100% success rate! try buying some gastrolyte or hydralite from the chemist and mix a bit in the water bottle - then have a big drink about half hour before you head out! powerade and gatorade is ok if the others are not available.

re stress fractures - be aware that they are repetitive strain overuse injuries that would be uncommon in kiting. more likely running or impact activity. stressies also take over 4 weeks to show on plain X-ray.

you would be best to visit someone that knows about feet - such as a podiatrist like me!! - IMO we can offer a lot more advice after generally researching, diagnosing and managing foot and ankle related injuries.

let me know how you go iggypop!! good luck!

I had the same problem in first few months of kiting. As weird as it sounds......I went to chiro and he gave me Some Foot exercises to strengthen my feet. Also stretching feet before kiting. I have not had any problems since.

I've got these and have had them on all sorts of different settings, but for the life of me, can't get them to stay on my feet properly. They're either so tight I can't get my feet all the way in them, or so loose I lose the board during ascent jumps.

There's an argument that if I can't get these pads to stick to my feet, I can't get any, and I think that's fair enough! Def User error.

Get your feet stronger, I took up barefoot running 2 years ago and my feet and lower legs are stronger than they were 20 years ago!

I ride boots but would definitely recommend the new naish straps.

Hey guys , the X-ray came back negative for any signs of fractures , but I have heard that they don't always show up . The foot has improved a lot but it's still not perfect it sometimes clicks if I put weight on the ball of my foot , but I can kite ok on it
I tried standing up on my tippie toes and lowering myself back down about fifteen times as a warm up last time I kited and it worked really well
I will try the electrolyte thing as well , another Kiter has suggested it may be dehydration ( the cramps not the injury) so this would point to the hydra lite cure as well ,
So good to be able to get reliable advice from people with experience ,

Pop some vitamins or a berroca before hitting the water for the hydration issues
