Help please. No problems going on natural side , but struggling going on opposite side. My board, airush x over, 142, mykite 10m airush lithium.

I can get up but board just wants to go sideways towards shore. After surfing allmy life it just feels so un natural to have my left leg back.

I just cant seem to edge. Would welcome any tips you may have

You probably have too much weight on your front foot and therefore your board is too flat and not edging enough. You probably also have both knees bent equally. To edge harder on your right tack you need to put more weight on your left foot and straighten your front leg. Also, look upwind and turn your hips and shoulders towards that direction as well. This will encourage your front leg to straighten up and to lean back against the kite as well (= more edge).

Would really help to have a picture of your riding or use video analysis as well.

It sounds like you are trying too hard to get upwind too quickly. Relax in the water in the waterstart position start risind your board down wind. It does not matter if you loose ground just get the feeling of riding on that side before you think about edging up. Keep weight on your back foot to.

One of the other posts recommended practicing on a skateboard, I have borrowed my sons' and persisted through the "I want a turn" whining! Although I think it will always feel a little awkward, it does definitely get better and I think I can track as well in both directions.

Good luck with it mate

I recommend nothing more than to just keep trying... It's easy for anyone to say do this or do that. However, you can't just use your brain to create muscle memory... you have to work it in. It will feel awkward and not feasible for a while but just keep doing it and stacking until you get it right.

I recently had a friend who learned and he couldn't go goofy no matter what... but he just kept trying regardless and he got there.

Had same problem for a couple sessions. I agree with skateboard. I forced myself
to ride a ripstick oposite as well as wake board. Side note i learned to wake board
simply to get the feel of edging a board.

Concentrate on getting pressure on your back leg and straighten front leg and it will come

Definately get on a skateboard. do it for 20mins and imagine you are kitesurfing and you'll be sweet.

As per Yacka15, when learning, its normal to go upwind easily in one direction (your "natural stance") but struggle to go upwind in the other direction (your "goofy stance".

Try getting your board speed and kite speed up first by going downwind slightly after your water start, then edge your board and bring your kite forward to go upwind.

I used to have exactly the same thing however after just endless trying I am now fine going upwind both ways.

I was getting pissed off at myself that i couldnt do it but one day it just clicked. It really is just practise practise practise... and just try and duplicate exactly what you are doing on your other tack.

To be honest it still feels much more natural with my left foot forward and I do all my jumps that way but as I said it really comes with time and after a while you'll think... why was that even a problem before?

Hey, thanks for all the reallly great advice, have taken it all onboard.
I had an hour session on the skateboard this morning as discussed, then had the most epic session so far. Wind blowing 18kts after using all the tips and advice on offer it finally clicked.....did some great goofy runs certainly still have some way to go, but ssssooooo happy with todays session.

Legs feel like jelly at the moment, will need a few lubricating ales to help.

I had this problem for many, many weeks... Then, I randomly borrowed a mates board, tried to go goofy, slipped slightly and all of a sudden, I was in the perfect position to edge (not go up wind, but edge) and bang, literally, I just got it, and never once again had a problem with it.

Like everyone says, don't try and edge too hard get going and 'play' around with the weight on your feet to see the effects.

You'll get it, it will just click, trust me!

Oh and don't put too much of your body weight onto the board, as it will depower the kite easily in lightish winds (around 15knots). Like in the progression DVD, lean back shoulders, hips forward ("dick in the air") and control board with "feet" as opposed to entire body with heavy weight on back foot. But of course in 20knot+ winds, just get on it and riiiideeee!!!

nice thread guys and great info. I'm newbie and only 4 days in but up and riding both ways crash to turn.

My my problem going switch or left foot forward as I'm goofy is taking off. I seems to take 4 or 5 attempts to get the power to get going and when i do I have no idea what I did different? Going right foot forward no worries 90% of the time.

Im thinking its not the kite but the body position on the board. I'll naturally drop the right shoulder more going right. But left I think I sit really flat?? Tomorrow is looking good and should be fun!!!
