hey all

About to start kitesurfing, and i have to decide between the 2010 Airush switch and the 2010 Slingshot SX.
And either a 2010 Airush lithium or varial.

At the moment i am leaning towards the 138 Switch and a 9 metre varial.
( I am 77kg and live in perth) at about $2400.

Have been looking at second hand gear but havent really seen anything suitable yet.

Also would anyone recomment taking lessons or getting a trainer kite.
I cant really afford both so its either $600 on lessons or a trainer kite and one lesson which would cost about the same.

any thoughts? thanks

board sounds like it may be too long (unless your pretty tall).
i'm 5'10" 90kg and started on a 141 x ride only to wish i had a shorter board. i now ride a 136.
I'd say you would want the next size down or you will change boards sooner than later. Also look at the north x ride as an option, from what i have been told it's a better beginer board you might keep.

YES GET THE LESSONS.
It will be well worth the money.
If you can get hold of a second hand trainer kite and fly it heaps before the lessons it will help alot, but,
If you only have enough cash for one or the other,,,,go the lessons.
Its way cheaper than hospital bills.

Trying to learn without lessons is a painfully slow(dangerous to you and bystanders) exercise.
Lessons will get you up and riding really quickly without many hours/days of painfull trial and error.

You will learn way more in a 1 hour lesson than 5 days trying to work it out yourself.

Board is ok to learn on, i'd go with a switch 138 as it has good width and is set up as a learner board.
The lithium is the retail version of the airush school kite DNA
But hold your horses $2.4 k is a lot for last years models, airush will be bringing out new models of these kites/boards really soon, there are some better deals on new gear to be had. pm Kitehard, he's back from northern travels and probably has some better deals on 2010 gear.
Like lot of wind said def spend the money on lessons, trainer kites are cheap to come by s/h.

Yes to lessons - absolute must. Buy second hand gear if you have to to get the money but get the lessons.

Switchies are great, and I think a 138 matched with a 9m Varial is a good pairing for your weight.

I agree $2400 is way too much. You should be able to get that set up for well under $2000 retail now.

thanks for the input guys.

Yeah i think i will wait another couple of weeks before choosing my rig, look around for a cheap trainer kite and see if there are any big improvements in the 2011 gear.

The hardest decision is finding a board and kite which is decent for learning but one that i wont grow out of after a summer of sailing. Will look at reviews on the north x and going a size down if i get the airush switch (im about 6ft).
A lot of the salesmen say that i will keep riding the switch and varial combination, but the local kitesurfers tend to think i will grow out of them both relatively quickly

Thinking that my best option is to take the zero to hero kite package and then buy all my gear afterwards.

I tried to teach myself when i started, destroyed 2 kites and was lucky not to hurt myself or someone else. When i finaly got a lesson i got to work out what i was doing wrong lots of dumb mistakes. They didnt fly the trainer kite for long in the lesson and dont think you really need one of you are doing lessons.

After my lessons i was a much better kiter and was soon ridding comfortably. If i didnt get lessons i think i would have given up.

Get lessons before you buy the gear, you may be a natural and be able to get some gear that will last you. The instructors will give some good advice, so listen to what he suggests.
